To no one's surprise, a new clinical trial demonstrates that the human papilloma virus vaccine Gardasil is as good at protecting men as it is in protecting women, researchers reported Wednesday. A clinical trial in more than 4,000 boys and men demonstrated that the vaccine was more than 90% successful in preventing genital lesions caused by the four strains of HPV that the vaccine is active against, about the same level of protection demonstrated for women.
The vaccine is currently approved in the United States for both males and females over the age of 9, but current recommendations call for administration only to females. But the vaccine has been highly controversial, both because some view it as an implicit approval of sexual activity and because of its cost -- nearly $400 for a complete regimen of three doses. An estimated three-quarters of girls don't even start the regimen, and only about a third of those who do start it actually finish.

I have a teenage daughter, and I’ve advised her to get the shot. Not because I think she will have sex. But because of the statistic that says by age 18, 25% of the women will have been abused.
I hope the 25% stat is overstated, but I know a lot of women who claim that they were raped when young, usually by a date. It may not be 25%, but it’s clearly a lot more than 0%.

First of all, HPV infections are usually asymptomatic, so most people don't know they have them, except for those with visible genital warts. Second, 50% of women (and presumably men) are infected by one or another type of HPV within three years of becoming sexually active. If you wait until people become sexually active it may be too late. The ideal time to vaccinate is pre-teen.
When I was about 8 years old I sat next to an old pervert that grabbed my crotch. Although discussing, it was a long way from rape. However, I would still be included in that 25% stat.
Which is why those who are sexually active, symptomatic or no should get the vaccine.
Those who are not sexually active yet should not get the vaccine. They are 100 percent immune from getting HPV.
There are reports of young girls who have died from the vaccine. It’s just not worth inculating those who are not sexually active.
I have been published before and I have written other reports at the request of public agencies.
I don’t have the time right now to provide you with the numbers, but I will do so later today. Have to head out the door.
Suffice to say around 18 girls and young women as last I wrote the report (about 2 years ago), had died from Gardasil. This number is likely higher today.
Yo Laz! You can finally get rid of those warts!
I'm sorry but that's precisely when they should be vaccinated. In the real world how many people know precisely the day they will become sexually active?
There are reports of young girls who have died from the vaccine
Again, are these well-documented reports from the medical literature or scare stories from sloppy MSM reporters and anti-vaccination websites? If the former please give me a reference.
Too late. Prophylactic, not therapeutic.
“In the real world how many people know precisely the day they will become sexually active?”
Most people in the real world wait for marriage, or they get their partner tested.
As for the source, the data is from VEARS.
If your partner gets a clean bill of health from a typical STD test done by a clinic or primary care doc, it will not include HPV. You won’t know that your new spouse had it until oh, about 4-6 months later.
And then you’d better hope your spouse doesn’t stray and bring back something you’ll have to live with for the rest of your life. The sad fact is that half of marriages today end in divorce, and a large percentage of those involve infidelity.
..that medicating and mutilating young girls and women is acceptable because apparently their lives are not valued...
...birth control in grade school, vaccines, abortion without telling parents...
...yet mention something that will be done to the boys....OMG...no!
It looks like Merck has payed off someone else for their new wonder vaccine. This stunt was tried in Texas a couple years back.
Let's ask this. If a virgin male uninfected with HPV, only has sex with another virgin female ininfected with HPV, (within the bounds of Holy Matrimony) what are their respective risks of contracting HPV without the vaccine?
Contrary to what the libertines and hedonists tell us, it is NOT unrealistic to expect individuals to abstain from sexual intercourse until marriage, and to select mates who have made the same decision.

Considering that my future spouse is a nurse, I should think that we’d know how to properly test for STDs including HPV.
I already said I do medical research. Why do you persist in assuming that I’m one of the ‘typical sort’.
I realize you have a screed of infidelity and fear to perpetuate, but you are simply fearmongering. Yes, half of all marriages end in divorce, but not half of those who marry end up divorced.
And a significant margin of those who commit infidelity are men. So if I can keep my pants on, that’s a significant reduction.
I’m not going to get a vaccine just because I don’t trust my fiancee. I would simply not marry her unless I trusted here. But apparently I’m not in the real world of hookers and courtesans. Of casual shack ups and hookups.
And I suspect that world has far greater concerns than HPV.
You are simply naive.
My ex-wife, who was the first and only person I’ve ever been with sexually, infected me with HPV. It came from a man she had sex with while away at college.
I’m anxious to hear how this is all my fault. I’m sure you’ll let me know.
Did you ask her to get tested before you slept with her?
You’re missing the point. We were already married.
"As of September 30, 2010, there have been 56 U.S. reports of death among females who have received Gardasil. Thirty of these reports have been confirmed and 26 remain unconfirmed due to no identifiable patient information in the report such as a name and contact information to confirm the report. Confirmed reports are those that scientists have followed up on and have verified the claim. In the 30 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine."
In other words, women have received Gardasil and died some time afterward. Coincidence does not prove causality.
