So what if Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich decide not to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 or their campaigns falter in the early going? Who will the GOP turn to?
Thats what Rasmussen Reports asked Likely Republican Primary voters in a new national telephone survey. Not surprisingly the best known of the eight other prominent Republicans mentioned came out on top. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani emerges as the clear leader among this group with 29% support. Tim Pawlenty, who recently stepped down as governor of Minnesota, comes in second with 17%.

Correct me if I'm off base here. Aren't polling outfits contracted to conduct a poll? I mean, do they sometimes poll on their own to see what the landscape really looks like?
I believe they to differing degrees and mixing the two together do both.

I’ve always liked Rudy, and think he’s very competent. But his pro-abortion position is a deal breaker for me.
Giuliani was already eaten alive by the Tea Party. We just weren’t called the Tea party yet!
Giuliani leads if all the other contenders are struck by lightning on February 30th.
