Genetic modification - isn't that what Luther Burbank did to great acclaim. "He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career. Burbank's varied creations included fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables. He developed a spineless cactus (useful for cattle-feed) and the plumcot."

Named a town in California after him too!

Oh but he failed!

He never developed any “high yield” non-food varieties.

Burbank did his work outside, not in a lab.

So, what he did doesn’t count.

Or something like that!

Luther Burbank cross pollinated different plants to produce strains which were more resistant to pests and diseases.

He did not splice*** bacterial*** DNA and then implant it into a plant’s genetic material for that same purpose.
