Genetic modification - isn't that what
Luther Burbank did to great acclaim. "He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career. Burbank's varied creations included fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables. He developed a spineless cactus (useful for cattle-feed) and the plumcot."
Named a town in California after him too!

Oh but he failed!
He never developed any “high yield” non-food varieties.

Burbank did his work outside, not in a lab.
So, what he did doesn’t count.
Or something like that!

(Overproduction, one of the top five worries of the American Farmer each and every year..)

Luther Burbank cross pollinated different plants to produce strains which were more resistant to pests and diseases.
He did not splice*** bacterial*** DNA and then implant it into a plant’s genetic material for that same purpose.
