This is something that should be done. No decision has been made yet, but they are floating around a few politician names and the USS Arizona.

Let's get the Secretray of the Navy and the US Congress's attention.

I believe the Enterprise, which has such a distinguished and historical service record as a US Carrier since before World War II on two seperate carriers now, should keep that record of service as a carrier going.

I'm betting that a politician of some sort will win out. My prediction is they'll name it USS Kennedy as a tribute to Jack, Bobby, and Teddy.

Will sign the petition, but doubt that it would do much good.

In today’s political climate, American Enterprise is not very compatible.

I am partial to “Burke” because he was a cousin but he already has namesakes.

"No decision has been made yet, but they are floating around a few politician names and the USS Arizona."

I could live with "Enterprise", only because of its uniquely historical context.

My personal preference, however, is that no US Navy ship of war be named after ANY politician, current or former, including Presidents. Our warships should be named after cities, counties, states or fallen US service members. Only people who have either paid the ultimate sacrifice, or have accomplished a remarkable feet of heroism (like a Medal of Honor winner), should be commemorated in such a way.

I'm tired of naming ships (and federal buildings, and airports, and national parks) after people who live high off the hog, on the government dole with dozens of staffers and then go on to enjoy a guaranteed pension. Where's the "sacrifice" in that so-called public service?

Nah. The last three carriers have been Republicans - Ford, Bush, Reagan. The next one will be a Democrat.

I'm not sure which camp McCain would fall in.

Sadly, we have reached a point in American history where politicians think they have to have a politician name on everything.

BTW, what is with the presidential library garbage? Why do we have to have one of those for every president? It is ridiculously expensive. Scan their records into the national archive and put the non-classified images online. Shred or burn most of the originals after 20 years.

This would save millions and millions from the federal budget.

I would add (and you're probably already aware of this), that the SecNav enjoys complete statutory authority to name US ships. Given the production time-line of this vessel, Obama's SecNav will make the call.

As such, my prediction is that it will either be named the USS Clinton, or - wait for it - the USS Colin Powell.

There are a lot of names that should be resurrected: Lexington, Hornet, Yorktown, Saratoga, Essex, Intrepid,

Done - there has almost always been an Enterprise in the Naval Service. The current Enterprise is the eighth ship to bear the name.

BTW, what is with the presidential library garbage?

Every president since Calvin Coolidge has one, and all the ones since Hoover are operated by the National Archives. The half dozen or so remaining libraries are usually operated by states or counties.

Let's hope not...these vessels sjhould not be politicised.

Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush had distinguished service careers in the US Navy...but just the same, I believe they should not be named for politicians. Enterprise, America, etc. There are many great names.

In this case, enterprise has such a distinguished tradition that it nbeeds to be done.

Please spread it around.

I just want to know that glorious name (Enterprise) will not be disgraced by the repeal of dadt. I don’t want it to be known as ‘The gay boat”. So then name it something else like “USS Longstreet”.

This is an excellent idea. I have been thinking the same thing for a long time. Passed it down my email list.
