I think it has less to do with tolerance than with looking at the broader world and realizing that they have have more in common with each other than with the melting pot that has become the UK. Britain can’t support the Protestants the way they had when the Northern Ireland economy was roaring decades ago, and at this point would love to just leave the place altogether; threats from the Protestants they encouraged to settle there hundreds of years ago prevent them from being abandoned by Britain. The Catholic birthrate will give them what bullets & bombs couldn’t, and both sides are coming to terms with that. In any case, the fighting has been over for years, and won’t be back.
