COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.

Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.

"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."

Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

I just listen to the NWS weather radio and do my own little forecasting.

Saturday may not be a big deal...NY is only in the 3-inch zone, and the weather people just downgraded mid-New England from 6-10 inches to ‘snow showers’...maybe it is heading out to sea...G-d have mercy, and it will.

The problem is the danger of going IN the barn. You certainly don’t want it collapsing more while someone is in it, and with more weather on the way, that’s not good.

Not to mention the time it will take to melt.

I watch the radars and the ‘nowcasting’ folks at AccuWeather forums...they seem to know a lot more than the media scaremongers...

Entry level jobs into broadcasting at the weather people.

Not many are actual meteorologists with meteorology degrees. Nobody gets a met degree to be on TV.

Besides, the stations want the ratings and widespread death and destruction get them.

The bottom of the barn is sound so we’re ok for now. It has good beams very close together and they are holding.

Yup. 3 snowstorms and 2 ice storms. It just couldn’t take the weight. Someone will be here tomorrow to push the front backwards.

What a beautiful old barn. If it was mine, I’d repair and fix it.

Of course as renters, you can’t do that. I wish the owner would, though.
