Returning Israelis: Egypt protests are not as bad as they seem

Two chartered flights out of Egypt carrying over 400 Israeli citizens landed in Ben-Gurion International Airport on Monday, Channel 10 reported, with returning Israelis claiming that the week-long anti-governmental protests that have been sweeping Egypt were not as bad as they seemed.

Protesters have been rocking Egypt, a key U.S. ally in the Arab world, complaining about surging prices and the gap between rich and poor, calling for a new political system.

Speaking to Channel 10 on Sunday, one of the passengers on the returning El Al flight said that the Cairo demonstrations did not look as bad on the ground as they did on television.

"We sat near Tahrir Square, people were walking around quietly, getting up occasionally and then coming back" the man said.

Israelis are not as easily rattled as some other people.

So... the anti-Zionist world media is trumping up the whole thing? Is that how I’m reading this?

Makes sense in a lot of ways if true. Evidence suggests they have wanted Mubarak out for a long time. If an Islamist gov't is installed in his place, they can pressure Israel for concessions. Perhaps rid themselves of Netanyahu.

The news always makes things look worse than they are.

Wouldn’t surprise me. I was watching al Jazeera this morning, and their coverage was very strongly militant and pro-protester.

I saw that. That is why I posted the Haaretz piece from those with eyewitness accounts.

I just saw an ad for a new movie called “perspective”. It shows a murder from each witness perspective.

Guess why so many eye witness reports vary.

“Another thread noted the opposite.”

Not really the opposite...

One would think that if these riots/uprisings, whatevers are as fervent as portrayed *and* the miltary’s or the police’s reaction was as brutal as portrayed, there would be THOUSANDS of dead, instead of dozens, across three countries and perhaps a dozen major cities. Personally, I believe these riots are catalyzed by food prices, and, while there might be some anti-govenment stuff going on, TPTB in those countries are trying to let these things flare up & burn out. But that’s just my opinion, neither here nor there.

OTOH, Israel has good reason to be very queasy about these things, because ALL roads lead to a more difficult situation for Israel, short term and long term. Immediately, natural gas deals with Egypt come under potential threat. Israel and Egypt have a sort of mutual tolerance policy which has served both of them fairly well, even if it’s not ideal. (what is?) And finally, *any* degree of chaos in Egypt is likley to lead at dead minimum to more arms imports into Gaza, which can only be trouble for Israel. So Israel is justified feeling uneasy about this. There’s essentially nothing good that can come of it. Israel, IMHO, regards the possibilities of friendly regimes emrging in these countries as near zero. I happen to agree.

The news always makes things look worse than they are.

I was watching the news once and I saw a town was flooded - completely under water, a total disaster, canoes in the streets, biblical proportions, yada, yada, yada,....

Then I saw it was my town.

I looked outside and it was warm and sunny. My house was high and dry.

I walked a couple of miles down toward a creek that runs through town and a few crappy houses were flooded. More news trucks than flooded houses.

I've gotten slammed for posting it but there is an Egyptian blogger that is tweeting through a friend in Jordan. He says the violence is police in street clothes mingling with the people. He said the people don't want Mubarak or Ikhwan (muslim brotherhood).

However there are reports that Bam has his fingers in this. Ayers, Dorhn and Jodie Evans (Code Pinko) were in Egypt last year and Bam lifted the US entry ban on the head of MB on Jan 28th.

Forgot to add that if these people are hoping for a democracy they aren’t going to get it. Too many powerful players against them.

I’ve started to entertain the possibility that this thing will just blow over.

It might be a little awkward next time Obama and Mubarak are seated next to each other.

Obama won’t let it blow over. He’ll incite if he can. Remember the Iranian students last year. He wouldn’t help them. He wants the MB in power in Egypt.

I think Obama has told the Muslim Brotherhood to keep cool, sit back and wait for elections.

Sounds like a real time exercise in how-to initiate then suppress rebellion to install another fraction of power while testing the curtailment of the web.

With no communication from the ground the news media can be used to paint a believable picture.

Nobody really cares, just trying to maintain their lifestyles without annoyance. Look at Mexico, more danger of drug cartels taking control of their government and eventually spilling over into the US.

The MB picked ElBaradei to be their mouthpiece, not the people.
