I don't recall this being discussed, but this article reminds us how drawn out the presidential election process has become. The first Republican primary debate is only three months off, and we should have a much better idea how things might develop from there.

GOP debates featuring liberal moderators are a giant joke. Where are the debates with conservatives asking the questions? Libs will ask about gay marriage, abortion, cuts to the welfare state and other assorted doozies all designed as ‘gotcha’ and to put our candidates in a bad light. All candidates should boycott these farces until the rules are changed and the Gwen Ifil, Brian Williams, Chris Matthews types are banned from participating.

How can you have a debate with no candidates?

And the Dim candidates refused to attend a debate which was to be hosted by Fox News. I agree the Republicans need to become much more demanding about who the questioners are for all the debate venues.

We've got three months to see if any candidates announce before the first debate. I don't think a shortage of Republican candidates will be a problem this year.

I can't wait. That means we will have all the candidates identified by 2 May. Sarah will probably announce is she is going to on Reagan's Birthday 11 Feb. Otherwise, I don't know when the rest will but I am pretty sure that all will be identified by 2 May which is great. Let's get this show on the road.

The MSM is trying to push things, they want to be in total control of the Republican candidate.

No serious candidate for President should show up for this.

I agree, the speculation going on now is pretty much a waste of time until the candidates announce and the main issues are addressed.

I do have a concern about the number of candidates we might have initially: ten, fifteen or even more. The debates aren't too useful until the number is pared down to about six or less.

I have this mental image of the stage props and layout of the old Hollywood Squares set where they were stacked three high. But we might need eighteen squares instead of nine for the first few debates.

They'll show up at the Reagan Library. I wish that weren't the first venue because they might have so many candidates that it will be difficult to organize and have decent debate.

Trouble is, this will not be a debate, but an opportunity for the liberal media to make any serious candidate look bad.

This is the debate held on May 3, 2007, also at the Reagan Library:

The Republicans who are involved in organizing these debates need to demand that the moderators be balanced as to the moderators’ personal political ideology.

The debate was announced in November but no date was given until Monday. It will be co-hosted by NBC News’ Brian Williams and POLITICO’s John F. Harris and will air on cable channels MSNBC, CNBC and Telemundo. It will also be livestreamed on Politico's website.

A Telemundo reporter will join WIlliams and Harris in asking questions.

These moderators do not inspire much in the way of confidence that the debate will be fair or balanced.

This is another area where Republicans need to grow a spine. I’ve already mentioned that the Dim candidates refused to participate in a debate hosted by Fox News during 2007-2008. Republicans could demand and get balanced panels of questioners for the debates. Some of them are still too much in the habit of just going along.
