McCain admitted while he felt invincible as a 20 year old testing himself and the very expensive planes the government allowed him to operate.
I wasnt even very distressed when I found myself in my airplane sitting on the bottom of Corpus Christi Bay one fine day, McCain confessed in front of his son and other young aviators. I swam to the surface, went to my quarters, changed my clothes, took a couple aspirin and headed out for another nights entertainment with my fellow bachelor officers. Kick the tires and light the fires. I loved the image of a naval aviator. I loved the life. It was fun. So much fun, I dont know how I survived it.

McCain’s got a Peter Pan Syndrome. No wonder he and Barry get along so well.
In WWII, George Welch was told by this CO that his squadron based in New Guinea would upgrade to P-38 Lightnings when they ran out of P-39’s (Nicknamed by it’s pilots the “Iron Dog”.).
P-39 “accidents” went up as a result.
George Welch was more famous as one of the P-40 pilots that got airborne at Pearl Harbor and shot down 4 Japanese planes.
It’s also rumored that as a test pilot for North American, he broke the sound barrier in the F-86 prototype before Chuck Yeager in the X-1.
That’s the first thing I thought about too.
The analogy with his senate career is not lost on me.

Please do not sully this man's honor and reputation as a pilot and warrior. The far left in this nation did everything they could to that end. When he was on the Forestall, he was just another pilot doing his job. When he was a captive in North Vietnam, he paid a truly horrific price for the fact that his father was a high ranking Admiral in the United States Navy.
Captain McCain was an honorable patriot of our great nation who demonstrated his duty, loyalty and patriotism time and time again during captivity.
Senator McCain is just a politician.
Well said.
Why are you jumping down my throat? In McCain's own words, he would go out and get blitzed and then jump in a plane the next day and dump it into Corpus Christi Bay.
All I'm saying is that such a cavalier admission only lends credence to the suggestion that he caused the fire that killed 134 men on The Forrestal. By his own admission he was a menace to his fellow aviators.
And...
Hearty congratulations to new Naval Aviator Ensign John S. McCain IV, and to his folks and relatives as well.
Best wishes for a successful career as a Naval helicopter pilot.

I think “dump it” are your words not his.
An accident led to his plane being underwater, he got out safely, and then when out for drinks.
Sounds quite normal for a 20 year old Navy pilot to me - actually quite normal for most 20 year olds. Flying jets off a carrier is a really high risk occupation, I bet he was grateful to be alive.
Your use of “dump it” makes it sound like a deliberate action.
LOL. Yeah. Sounds like he was grateful to be alive a lot. Again, using his own words, he doesn't know how he survived his drunken shenanigans.
Here's an excerpt from an investigation about the Forrestal fire including passages from his own book about the incident:
McCains book skips over the weeks after the Forrestal fire, but Timberg says that the young naval officer spent the months of August and September 1967 unsure of his status. Following McCains application for a transfer to the Oriskany, his orders were delayed, and in September he returned to his home in Jacksonville, Fla.
There, an old friend, Chuck Larson, saw a change in McCain: The pilot was discouraged about his future. McCain confided to Larson that he might have to get out of the Navy because, in the words of the Timberg biography, his past had become a burden and whenever he joined a new outfit he was dismayed that his reputation for mayhem had preceded him.7
Aside from any questions about his Forrestal actions, McCain had, in his short Navy career, crashed two planes and flown a third into power lines in Spain because of, as he put it, daredevil clowning.8
I don't know. What do you think? Do you think "wet starting" an engine might fall under the category of "daredevil clowning"?
Nope. Never said I did.
You familiar with Flight Deck Ops?
Nope. Never said I did.
You wouldn't survive in that time.
How do you know. Are you Miss Cleo?
Grow up.
Blow it out yer ear.
This Air Force vet agrees
You’re absolutely right Texas Eagle! I crashed a Navy training plane myself and it scared the shiite out of me!! I certainly didn’t go out and party it up afterward with my buddies like McCainiac admitted doing, rather went home and spent some time with my family contemplating whether I wanted to continue that very dangerous profession. A few days later, I decided to continue but never bragged about my stupidity in the first place, and never broke another airplane, unlike ol’ Johnny.
He might have been an exemplary POW, but was/is a crappy role model for our young military personnel. BTW, I am also a USNA grad, but NOT at the bottom of my class, NOT the son of a senior Navy admiral, and NOT bragging about my shortcomings like this slacker!!
Just saying...
