Rick Santorum's nascent presidential campaign has died with a whimper fueled by a pander. And no matter whether it was born out of ignorance, political expediency or both, there's no excuse.
Mr. Santorum, the former U.S. senator and representative of Pennsylvania, spoke to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Tuesday last in Des Moines. All U.S. vehicles should be required to burn ethanol and other biofuels in addition to gasoline, he said.
"This is purely and simply a national security issue," said Santorum, a one-time opponent of taxpayer subsidies for alternative fuels, noting that some oil-producing countries are hostile to the United States. (See today's George Will column to better slay the implications of this rationale.)
Santorum said it's the government's responsibility to expand the marketplace for such alternative fuels by mandating their use. (And just as incredible, Newt Gingrich said much the same thing last week.)

Santorum—What will you do when your Lawn service has no more lawn mowers due to the damages from Ethanol???
All I’m saying is... don’t put our eggs in any one basket.
I want ALL the baskets.
Oil. Coal. Natural Gas. Nuclear. Solar. Geothermal. Hydro. Wind. Methane from landfills. Efficient appliances. Conservation (heck, my WWII-fightin’ dad taught me to turn lights out when I leave a room... it’s just common sense!)
ALL OF THE ABOVE. Anything less sells America short.
I just read an article about clothing that generates power from everyday body movement, and a phone that never has to get plugged in because it gets its power from moving around all day in your pocket. If it helps me give the finger to the oil barons of the Middle East and Venezuela, it’s worth a look, I say!
He’s just saying what Arlen whispers in his ear.
Any questions why Iowa makes sure it has the first presidential caucuses each election cycle?
If this and the other unprincipled actions mentioned here are all true, then Santorum’s gonna get weeded out quickly. And quite frankly that’s a good thing. I’d like to see the Pub Presidential field get winnowed very rapidly down to two or three viable conservative candidates.
And it didn't take long for him to do that....

Yeah....the same goes for Bush too.
That's what Romney is hoping for. If we have two or three conservatives out there in the primary splitting the conservative vote, Romney will win the primary with a plurality (less than 50%) of the vote. We need to winnow it down to ONE conservative so Romney doesn't have a chance.
Don't get me wrong, I think Spector is a snake but at that time, Spector was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and he vowed to support Bush's SC nominees. He had the power to do it, Toomey did not. (I think I have the story correct)
I do remember Santorum saying he had no idea that Spector would eventually switch to Democrat.
We have unrealistic expectations about what to expect from a candidate. We're all probably going to be willing to overlook a flaw in a candidate we really like and yet find the flaw in one we don't like.
Even Palin is not flaw free.
Nobody is flaw free. Jesus was, and look what they did to him!
That's a little hard to swallow considering that Spectre did the D-to-R switch earlier in his career when he needed it to further his political ambitions. Why would anyone think he wouldn't do it again?

Wow. This guy is done with Conservatives. Nobody but ethanol farmers who get fat subsidies believes this crap is a practice solution anymore. Gore and the leftists are even walking away quietly from pushing this. I just can’t figure out what Rick was thinking on this. He is so tone deaf sometimes.
