Key Republicans are embracing a major spending initiative outlined in President Obama's State of the Union address.
Two top members of the House Transportation Committee said they will push the president's initiative seeking to give 80 percent of Americans access to high-speed rail over te course of the next 25 years.
"I believe it's good for America to develop a high-speed rail corridor in the Northeast corridor," Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), the chairman of the railroad subcommittee, said according to the Connecticut Post. "It's a place we have to start, we have to accomplish it, because then I believe all of America, in the various corridors around the country, will want high-speed rail if they see success here."
Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), the chairman of the whole committee, also said Friday he was "pleased that President Obama has helped to launch a system for improved passenger rail service for our nation."

“rite brytlea
NE CORRIDOR RAIL IS WORKING
people need to think - not just have knee-jerk reactions.”
Nice to hear. And any other corridor that can get full PRIVATE FINANCING is more than welcome to build a train line. Us Tea Party types here are all with you. Heck, I think that most of us would even support eminent domain (to get the necessary right of way) and liability caps. But NO MORE FEDERAL MONEY.
ENOUGH ALREADY - WE ARE BROKE!!!
“ahhh....
who builds the hiways ?”
Fuel tax - self-sustaing
“who builds the airports ?”
Aviation fuel tax, airline landing fees - self sustaining
“how many more cars will NYC take before it tips over?”
Tolls collected by the Port Authority - mostly on cars, to PAY FOR the train system there.
Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), the chairman of the whole committee, said "...
And therein lies the attraction these cretins have to high-speed rail -- it would give big money to spend, some power to dispense.
Neither Schuster nor Mica has learned the lesson of the Tea Party yet.
Actually, Willie the federal government charges a tax on every plane passenger and they collect enough to pay for the comerical airports. But the low life congressmen use the fund to buy votes and they spend it on little county airports and building hangers and etc. For rich people. Ever read about the germ bag meritha and his private airport. The true location of welfare for the rich.
We have Zero in charge and zero in bank. Where the hell is the money supposed to come from?
I love trains but I know I can’t buy one when I have zero in the bank and in charge of the country!!!
i think we have a deal
Can you name one long distance rail system in the country other than densely populated Northeast NY to Washington run that is heavily travelled by business travellers. And even that run is heavily subsidized and loses money. What you are suggesting is a pipe dream of build it and business travellers will come. Businesses do not have the time or money to pay their employees to spend 10-12 hours on rail lines to traverse a few states.
There would be a market for a well run (might be inconsistent with the government proposals!) high speed train with reasonable fares on that route. From what I've read, high speed trains run from 120 to 250 mph, depending on the track and the system. San Francisco is about 350 miles from LA, so a three hour trip would be very competitive with air travel, and from my previous rail trips, far more comfortable (large comfortable seats, with plenty of room to recline, and a footrest.).
The flight itself is about an hour, but getting to the airport in LA can be a major hassle, and you waste an hour at the airport. An LA to San Diego route might be even more popular - about 125 miles, and the traffic is horrible. A 1 1/2 to 2 hour train ride to San Diego would have lots of takers. As a disclaimer, I don't know the economics of running a rail line, so whether it would be profitable or not for a private company I can't say. But I can say that if the ticket were reasonably priced, they would have lots of customers.

That’s kind of my point too. Airline passengers PAY THEIR WAY. In fact we have to pay a LOT MORE than we need to, in order to finance the GRANDIOSE TERMINALS that local politicians get from our PFCs. It angers the hell out of me. But airline passengers sure as heck pay their way.
Now, it’s also not a good idea to for the government-train crowd to not get into car travel or plane travel, because in both cases, the passengers/drivers pay taxes to fully cover the cost of their transport. Could we do that with trains - spare me. The tax would cost 10 times the cost of the ticket...and the ticket will be expensive anyway (look at Amtrak’s prices).
well uni...all this might make very good sense....but what about the crips and the bloods and their need to safely get their weed and crack intracity? pharmaceuticals have become a large part of our economy...trouble is tho....them gang a bangers...always pack heat ...and my guess is there’ll be a lot of shootin up of both kinds in rail cars..this has a lot to do with the paranoia attendant to retail druggism.....so, on second thought ‘THUMBS DOWN ON DA RAILS’
i reserve the balance of my time..
p.s a nice lady that i walk with of an evening here at the golf club ...tells em this story...her husb since diseased was a railroad lifer ...she got a free lifetime pass on AMTRACK anywhere she wishes to travel upon his death....she said it was very pleasant till a few years ago. At that time the brain boys at Amtrack decided to make their toilets unisex... she says they stank so much and were so filthy they were virtually useless... she says therefore she wont even travel on them for free....!
Peace - brother.
I would say that the people who voted for them are the stupid ones. Also, this is nothing new. Each time the Democrats need support for one of their programs, there is always one or more Republicans waiting in the wings to provide that support. [Examples]When Clinton need support for his assault weapons ban, a member of the Republican Party was there. When Clinton’s veto of the bill to prohabit partial abortions was about to be overturned, a Republican provided the vote to sustain the veto. When the voters needed to be assured that an obama Administration would be best for the Country, a Republican was johnny on the spot assuring them that the Country had nothing to fear from an obama administration. And last but not least, there are those who believe that the Republican Party will be the Nation’s savior.
I doubt you’d like the train so much if you had to pay what it actually cost to transport you sans any govt. subsidies.
pssst hey, BRAIN BOYEZ....if you want to build something..
BUILD OIL REFINERIES AND NUKCLEAR PLANTS...and damn quick..!
“Actually, Willie the federal government charges a tax on every plane passenger and they collect enough to pay for the comerical airports.”
I guess what’s so hard for some people here to grasp is that intercity train travel is VERY EXPENSIVE compared to driving, or flying (for longer distances). People may wish it to be cheaper, but no one has figured out how to accomplish that. Maybe some day they will - and when they do, we can have private trains, or even government run trains that pay for themselves.
But not for decades, and WE ARE BROKE as a country.
Oh welp.. I’ll dream of flying cars then.
I thought I read that here. If true, Obama is more unbalanced, or idiotic than I thought.
