CAIRO (AP) -- The U.S. Embassy is telling Americans in Egypt to consider leaving the country as soon as possible.

Barricades have gone up (BBC) and the army has appeared at Sharm El-Sheikh (AL JAZEERA) in the Sinai where there are many tourists vacationing plus the summer home of Hosni Mubarak.
There is speculation he is hiding there right now.
Meanwhile, the Arabic correspondents of Al Jazeera have had their credentials revoked by the Egyptian government and the Al Jazeera’s Cairo office has been ordered closed.
Seeing all those army troops on the streets makes me think they will put down any trouble and keep Mubarak in power.
They may want to!
When the Khomeni creature took over Iran, it was ugly. Had a friend whose family was there. Son was at school when the takeover happened, they didn’t see him for several days, didn’t know if he was detained by circumstances or the regime.
I have trouble believing that our Government hasn’t ordered them out. If Mubarek goes, they are all hostage fodder.

if the State Dept was on top of things, how come Israel is on the “warning” list and not Egypt? looks like we were caught flat-footed
The state department is about a week late on this one.
I wonder if this includes the American troops stationed in Egypt.

I have trouble believing that anyone would want the Feds to order Americans to leave a country.

Interesting... when I read that, about the seeming change in stance of those troops, my own immediate thought was 'military coup'...
There was some speculation yesterday that by installing two men with strong military backgrounds that Mubarak was even initiating a “soft coup”...putting the government in the hands of the military for when/if he leaves.

Other countries have arranged evacuation flights.

And how might that happen? No flights leaving, Can’t drive over the Israeli border.
Could go to Kenya of Tunisia to get killed instead instead of staying in Egypt to get killed.
Guess I’ll spend vacations here in the good ole U.S.A. for a while.

How about the Luxor Pyramid in Las Vegas? On the downside, it's in Harry Reid Territory.
I have no desire to ever step foot in a single Muslim country. I simply cannot fathom spending my hard earned money in a place and benefiting people who wish me to be either converted (at the tip of a sword), enslaved or beheaded. No thanks.
I also have no interest in ever stepping foot on the African continent.
