The “Nazi” component in the movie - as related to Edward and Mrs. Simpson - was completely left out. As far as I was concerned (someone who was unfamiliar with the British crown and/or history), Edward abdicated to marry a floozy (that’s the impression I was left with, and nothing more). Hitler and the impending war was included in the movie, but no reference to the relationship or friendship to Edward.
No. Churchill was probably the King's leading champion in Parliament. He went very far out on a limb in his support of the King's right to marry whom he chose.
Of course, at the time, Churchill was an aging back bencher, with no apparent prospects of ever returning to the government. His party viewed him as an eccentric, warmongering, blowhard, and Labour hated him for his anti-Communism. Having Churchill lead the King's defense probably hurt a lot more than it helped.
Actually, there was one...see my post above.
I believe it was Baldwin and his administration that was pressing the issue, not Churchill.
I also have read just about every book about this loathsome pair, and what Cincinna has written is correct.
BTW, I just saw “The King’s Speech” in the theater for the fourth time. A real pleasure! All the principal actors were superb.
