An array of Republican heavyweights who backed Mitt Romneys 2008 presidential bid are not yet committed to - and in some cases, downright skeptical of - the former Massachusetts governors all-but-certain 2012 campaign.
In each of the traditional early states, top Romney supporters from the last campaign tell POLITICO that theyre hesitant to get behind the nearest thing the GOP has to a frontrunner. His difficulties are particularly acute in Iowa and South Carolina, where his former enthusiasts say they have not heard from him, believe he may be intent on downplaying the states in his second White House run and are openly flirting with his potential rivals.
But those two states where Romney had difficulties with their socially conservative electorate in 2008 arent the only ones where the former governor is losing support.
Former Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), the top elected official in the Granite State whose endorsement of Romney in 2008 was seen as a pivotal moment, said in an interview that hes firmly undecided about who hell back in next years primary.
Im listening to all the candidates and have not made any decision, Gregg told POLITICO. Its one of the more open fields Ive seen over the years. There is no presumptive favorite at this time the way there was with McCain, Bush, Dole and Bush I.
Asked specifically what Romney needed to do to earn his support again, Gregg, who was a national co-chair of the Bay Staters bid in 2008, said flatly: I havent made any decision.
The list of past Romney supporters now on the fence or on the other side includes high-profile figures like Gregg,Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, as well as lesser-known but influential behind-the-scenes players like Iowa power broker Doug Gross...

Of course he won’t be supporting Romney, he’ll be busy traversing the country on behalf of the Palin for President campaign.
Mitt Romney is a FRAUD, he RUINED Mass. with socialized medicine & gay marriage. Don’t let him finish Obama’s job because he will!
“There is no presumptive favorite at this time the way there was with McCain, Bush, Dole and Bush I.
...McCain and Dole were “presumptive favorites”?! Whose?
But he has nifty snap on hair. He calls it the greasy combed back ‘mitty’

I will NOT vote for Romney
THE MAINSTREAM MEDIOT'S!
It’s high time to DeMint to demitt. The fact that he ever supported Romney is the only think I don’t like about DeMint.
Nikki OWES Sarah, big time. OK, Sarah hasn't announced yet, but I'm just reminding Nikki.
Rush Limbaugh supported Mitt Romney too back in 2008. A lot of people did a lot of stupid things simply trying to stop John McCain after the 2008 primary essentially became a two-way race.
Think back to 2008; there were no solid conservatives running as first-tier candidates. For many people Romney was as close as you were going to get. Even Rush Limbaugh got behind Romney just before the voting started.
Give Demint a break for 2007-08.
Now if Demint endorses Romney in this election cycle that is a different kettle of fish and he cannot be excused for that.
I’m telling you: the man wears a hairnet to bed.
I don’t remember Rush supporting Romney at all. I do, however, remember who Rush did not support and that had always been McCain.
I just hope that we get someone new in the list of presumptive runners other than Palin, Pawlenty and Romney. Doing something stupid is what the state Republican party elites do best.
The Primary winner could/will had Obama a second term easily.
I hope it does crumble. I think I sent a note to DeMint on Facebook asking him not to support Romney. WE don’t need Obama, Jr. to run this country!
