Being developed by DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), the Kaveri engine was initially being developed for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas programme but now it will be used on the AMCA, which is expected to be ready by 2016-17, senior officials told PTI here.

The AMCA is a twin-engine indigenous fighter aircraft programme for which initial sanctions have already been accorded by the Defence Ministry, they added.

Not going to be done without foreign help. Why can’t they let the private sector into defence in a big way?

The Indian private sector on its own does not have the technology base to contribute to the strategic sectors (space/defence/nuclear). The only practical solution, which is creating JVs with foreign companies, will not be allowed by the noble patriots in all political parties in India and the diligent proletariat of the public sector companies.

Small industries may not be all that's required.

We need the Tatas and mahindras and the L&T's in a big way.

The big guns will need to pour in more funds into new R & D and manufacturing, which they are doing on a small scale. But it will take some time to gain critical mass and be considered commercially viable.

I think they are quite ready and able. I read somewhere that Tata Power ( of all the Tata companies) makes MBRLs for the Army. With some FDI and know-how, things can get moving fast.

I pray it happens. The stranglehold of the retd generals in defense purchase from abroad must be broken.
