I'm not sure if there are any Jews who are calling for the reinstatement of those barbaric punishments (I've seen many calling for the return of animal sacrifice in Israel, however).

I'm loathe to step into this -- clearly the muslim faith is a false faith, and therefore they have no authority to put people to death; and clearly these punishments are used to support their barbaric treatment of women as slaves to be sold to old dirty men.

But it was God Almighty who instituted stoning for the violation of His commandments. It was his appointed representatives who passed judgment, and the deaths by stoning were therefore holy and just.

So I cringe at the blanket condemnation of the practice as "barbaric", or something that should rightly be "reformed" by civilized man, suggesting God is somehow uncivilized.

We still have the death penalty in this country, but we do it more "humanely", as if the injuries, pain, and suffering of the last minutes of one's life is of greater concern than they days, months, or years of living knowing the exact time of your death, or the termination of one's life on this earth.

Stoning seemed to be stopped by Jesus because the Jewish leaders no longer had the moral authority to impose punishments. One might argue today that our country has lost it's moral authority to enact what was once a Godly punishment of execution as well.

Sorry, this doesn't pertain to the barbarity of the muslim practice as I said...

You know,I just have to reject the words and acts of His appointed representatives when they do things which are vile.

Now wasn't there a bunch of people living in an area and the leaders told the Israelites"you must kill all those people but you can spare the virgin girls, and ,oh yes,the tribe gets to keep all those other people's stuff but bring it to us leaders so we get first pick?"

I don't think a god that sanctioned that is exactly good-but I can easily conceive of lustful men making such an order and claiming they were inspired.

God repeatedly punished the Israelites for various evils they and their leaders committed,so don't even try to tell me every word and act of those leaders was proper and just in the eyes of God.

There are always a lot of vindictive spiteful hateful people who use religion and the fear of eternal punishment and retribution by some god,any god, as the means to impose the will of the fallible ,power-hungry scum.

If there is anything more pointless and futile than a god who would create a universe and a people only to rule them through terror of future punishments, with the reward being membership in an eternal cheering section ,then I haven't thought of it.

Whatever God desires of us I am pretty sure it doesn't involve commiting acts of surpassing brutality.
