Several other political websites were slower than normal during the peak SOTU for me. As I recall only one tor two networks would carry Bachman’s entire speech which might explain the sluggish site. Just massive amounts traffic IMHO.

FR used to run like a gazelle during these events, with thousands of posts.

I knew FR would be moribund, it usually is when there’s a live thread on an event of some significance. So I opted to avoid the echo chamber where functionality is inversely proportional to the participation.
And instead I watched a WW2 flick on youtube.
Guess what? It was the slowest load ever. I can still see the whirling dots that came on every 90 seconds.
Just goes to show, you cannot escape destiny.
