It would be interesting to see how the state and federal government would respond if something like this were to happen today.
Why don’t you edit the wiki page and add the missing facts?
We never learn.
Take up a collection for a citizen funded memorial.
“Why dont you edit the wiki page and add the missing facts?”
I’ve played the wiki game before....you’re simply outnumbered....the libtards will simply revert your edits...
you want to see for yourself...go th
“Why dont you edit the wiki page and add the missing facts?”
LMAO....go ahead and try it...see what happens...
I’ve played the wiki came with their libtards before.....you are out numbered...
McMinn county was no pro desegregation powerhouse and east TN though Republican off and on is not the least bit socially "progressive" except around colleges.
This was a fight about being heard and having your slate elected to boards that mattered.
For instance back then often the sheriff in the south was the tax collector too.
The place is less than 5% black and never was exactly a cauldron of race heroics or misdeeds.
It is a mountainous/hilly area of small farms.
Btw...I've known this story all my life. Maybe academia is not interested and kids who post Wiki don't care but I'm not sure it's a conspiracy.
Like it or not, blacks in the south..even the few in McMinn county were ultimately given their vote (and all that BS pandering that sadly came too) from local white mostly Democrat at the time voting citizens who had had enough...bolstered by liberal GOP in DC and most Democrats in DC voting for all those acts etc.
I was there ..I saw it. Decent folks while not desiring their daughters to marry blacks (still don't mostly) did in fact want the turmoil to end, blacks be allowed to vote and thought the Klan was low class.
This McMinn thing was just about cronyism...little to do with much beyond that and is no milestone in black Civil Rights.
it's this thinking that leads folks here to crow that all those civil rights acts were so great and MLK was a conservative
pure fantasy from conservatives for whom the truth is too complicated and messy
In the Deep South by the time of Reagan, most of those former White Southern Democrats were running as fast as they could into the new more socially conservative GOP of the silent-moral-majority...a Great Trek that had been in the making since Barry....even some southerners like my dad were Eisenhower men.

Here is a living history interview done in the year 2000 where Bill White talks about his days in WWII and the Battle of Athens.
This is very much worth reading.

We can only try.
If anyone can get a copy of the magazine, “Southern Outdoors”, December, 1978, there is a great article of Bill White hunting wild boar with a spear in the mountains. It also mentions the Battle of Athens.

Be my guest...I’m simply saying “been there, done that”
I would suggest using original news articles from the period...some do exist scanned to the net...
May the schwartz be with you...
Kinda says it all doesn't it? Now think how far we've fallen since Bill's time...
Makes me wanna puke at the thought of our own cowardice.
Excellent post, wardaddy (and not a bad rant, either).
Bump for later
There you go again, wrecking a perfectly good story with facts.
Next you’ll be telling us that Republicans like Rockefeller and Javits and Percy and Hatfield weren’t conservatives, and that Democrats like Harry Byrd and John Stennis and Strom Thurmond were. You are without a doubt going to fail Revisionism 101.
politics is convoluted and serpentine and circuitous in hindsight
this blather of GOP always good and Dems always bad...may be true 80% of the time especially since 1980 but that 20% exception kills us
would today's average conservative rather have John Stennis or Strom Thurmond or Sonny Montgomery fighting communism (hence Islam) or Lowell Wiecker or Nelson Rockefeller...or even Olympia Snowe?
this socially conservative GOP is a new animal...the Dixiecrats were more culturally conservative than most GOP at that time
Excellent. Hallmark as opposed to Hollywood. I hadn’t considered that.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Here is another profound quote from Bill:
“The Special Forces didnt take no prisoners. Yeah, we killed them all, and killed all we could, and wanted to kill more. We couldnt kill enough of them because they badly mistreated us. So were going to badly mistreat them. You dont win wars by being good people. You have to be as cruel and as vicious as that enemy or you dont win. Its just that simple, no in-betweens. You just fight to the death and let it go at that. Thats hard for people to understand, but thats the way I liked it. Do you think for a minute that Id give up to them people, let them abuse me, and torture me, and then kill me? No! Thats silly. You kill all of them you could kill. And then let them kill you if they can. Thats the way it is. And most Marines thought that way. Thats just the way American boys think. At least those American boys thought that way.”
Those were REAL men. I guess that is why they call them “The Greatest Generation”. Compare this to the wussies we have in our government - military leadership today. Our brave troops are not allowed to win today.
Look at how twisted the RoE in Ashcanistan is right now. Disgusting...
