ROTC at Stanford

There has been discussion of returning ROTC to Stanford University. The following is a letter to the editor in today's San Jose Mercury opposing it

ROTC still does not belong at Stanford

Contrary to Lisa Krieger's assertion (Page 1A, Jan. 20), discrimination against gays was never a reason for booting ROTC from Stanford.

The real reason was (quoting the present committee's notes) "The majority (of the 1968-69 Ad Hoc Committee on ROTC) felt that the personal conduct standards of the three services 'can seriously limit the student's free participation in all facets of intellectual inquiry and legal political activity.'"

It concluded that a formal, on-campus ROTC program was inconsistent with the definition of Stanford University as "a community whose members ... have a primary commitment to the creation and dissemination of knowledge, in an environment of free intellectual activity."

I think the good professor has forgotten what has given him and the students at Stanford the ability to exercise "the student's free participation in all facets of intellectual inquiry and legal political activity."

Maybe that’s because an ROTC scholarship is a contract? Contracts are inherently limiting as they define a set of obligations between parties (in this case the military & the cadet). So yes, by definition the ROTC cadet may not act-out in certain ways that the student radicals consider “expressions of freedom”. Idiots.

Like a lot of Liberals, they just make up new excuses when ever their old one is no longer useful. They will never allow ROTC back on campus until the Federal Government cuts all funding and student loans that they need...

After-all they are still a for profit business.

I don’t believe liberal institutions deserve to have ROTC anyway. The military should reject any offers from those who are actually enemies of this nation.

You consider Stanford to be an enemy of the United States?

Let’s just get to the bottom line and change the official name to:

The Stanford University Gay ROTC

ROTC doesn’t belong at Stanford because the mind-numbed zombies coming out of Stanford don’t belong in the military. I suspect there are darn few patriots left in that place.

The US Armed Forces can do better at state or community college.

And Stanford should be completely cut off from any Federal funds.

“You consider Stanford to be an enemy of the United States? “

I consider Professor Danny Colligan to be an enemy of the United States.

"a community whose members ... have a primary commitment to the creation and dissemination of knowledge, in an environment of free intellectual activity."

....as long as that intellectual activity conforms to the liberal orthodoxy. We can't have anyone question their theories of climate change, or ideas on abortion, or marriage, affirmative action, immigration....that's hate speech and must be banned.

They are fighting for ROTC at Columbia University too. Kids there travel to Fordham for ROTC training. They are winning a few battles, they were just allowed to raise the American flag over Columbia. Hard to believe we live in the same country.

Any time you take federal money for anything you are subject to their rules, if Stanford doesn’t want federal money then they can do as they please.Let the arrogant bastards beg the ROTC to return.

Stanford doesn’t deserve an ROTC program. Stanford doesn’t even come close to the high standards set by the military. I oppose a Stanford ROTC program as well as any Federal money (my money) going to Stanford. Stanford doesn’t meet MY standards.

When land grant colleges and universities were established, post-Civil War, one of the items in the charter was they were supposed to offer military training. If Stanford is a land grant school, it's in violation of its charter and the Feds should cut off ALL funds until the school lives up to its charter.

I think Stanford is a private institution. They may accept federal money, research grants etc, but they were founded under a private endowment if memory serves.

We agree on most things, Ray, but I've got to disagree with you on this one. Part of the reason Stanford is a nest of Lefties is because the federal government permits stuff like this. You know darned well that a conservative-run institution would not be permitted to have rules like this and take federal money or aid.

Defund NPR, force ROTC back onto campuses. These are the battles that need to be won if we are to get our country back from the likes of Obama. If Stanford can stand the loss of federal money & research grants (while maintaining their 'prestige'), more power to 'em. But I doubt that they can.

I rather just de-fund Stanford...

One of the problems conservatives face in academics is that they are literally DOMINATED by leftists, esp. in the Ivy Leagues. Not only that, but the judiciary is riddled with sympathizers (after all, they graduated from those places). There is not much chance that a lawsuit to force ROTC back onto the campuses of Stanford, Yale, and other Ivy League viper’s nests will actually succeed or be enforced even if the suit is successful.

Our best chance is to simply hit them in the wallet and hope that topples their leadership.

I'm in complete agreement. Hit 'em in the wallet & watch them scream. Eventually they have to cave. No university that's been pumping all it's private endowments into it's physical plant can actually run exclsively on tuition. Federal money is a major factor. There'd be a huge budget dislocation if they tried to reshuffle the finances, and I'm betting that they couldn't swing it.

I think you might be correct there. However, I've been a believer that any school that discriminates against the ROTC should be ineligible foe any kind of federal aid, subsidies, or grants. Discrimination is discrimination and we, as a society don't like discrimination — unless you're a leftie and they discriminate all the time — so we turn off the money spigot. Turning of the money spigot will turn around attitudes, even leftie academic attitudes, very abruptly. Lefties are always attracted to other people's money . . . it's in their DNA.

That ought to be a central principle of the Federal government: Flaunt Federal Law and lose ALL Federal funding and services.
That should include “sanctuary” cities, colleges, universities, state and local governments, etc. Stop the funding and close the federal offices, until they come into compliance.
