Wal-Mart In Unions' Cross Hairs
IBD Editorials ^ | January 21, 2011 | Staff

Organized Labor: The union idea of civil discourse is to protest outside opponents' private homes. Now union supporters are targeting a developer , with fliers showing a bull's-eye and his home address.

Cue the chirping crickets. That will be the soundtrack for mainstream media reaction to the latest example of thuggery perpetrated by Wal-Mart opponents who are not happy that the non-union retailer wants to build a Wal-Mart-anchored development on the site of an abandoned Chevy dealership in Washington, D.C. The development would employ up to 1,200 people in a city with 10.2% unemployment.

A group calling itself Wal-Mart Free DC is organizing a protest, not at one of the proposed sites or at Wal-Mart headquarters, but at the private home of the developer. A flier produced by the group gives his name and home address and invites protesters to assemble on his front lawn. Oh, yes: There's a smiley face centered on some cross hairs on the flier.

The group claims no formal union affiliation, yet prominently displayed on the group's website are links to sites such as WalMartWatch funded by Service Employees International Union and United Commercial and Food Workers International Union. Certainly they are employing the thuggish tactics used before by the purple shirts of SEIU.

Last May, a frightened teenager was trapped inside his home as a mob of about 500 bussed in by SEIU demonstrated and chanted on his front lawn in an effort to intimidate his father, a deputy general counsel with Bank of America. Fortune magazine's Nina Easton was a neighbor and provided the account of a story that might otherwise have received little notice.

Just as I was content with my anti-Walmart position, Unions had to target them. Now I’m torn. Which do I dislike more? Walmart or Unions?

I’m not a fan of Walmart but I don’t consider them to be an enemy. I prefer Meijer stores. They have comparable prices and sell a lot of locally grown produce.

You don’t have to buy any Chinese junk from Wal-Mart. There’s always the food and other expendables most of which are American.

For once, I agree with a union. Send China Mart to Detroit or some other hellish lib place.

I seem to remember that Walmart stopped the meat cutter union. Now, all of the meats at Walmart are prepackaged.

I remember when a few years ago you could have the butcher at Wal Mart cut or slice you a roast the way you wanted it.

There are now more government employee union members than private sector union members in America.

Unions. The hands-down choice. WalMart will not destroy the economy, but unions will be happy to do it as long as they get “theirs’. Look for unions to want to appropriate private sector 401Ks and IRAs to fund their underfunded pensions

I worked in the produce department of Walmart. That will make anyone see them as the enemy.

My whole take on it is that if I have a convenient alternative that is where my money goes. I’m not real happy about the Walmart Homland Security thing, but I don’t think that’s enough to keep me from going there if I really need something in the middle of the night.

If you don't like Wal-Mart's business model, there are other stores which will still cut your roast exactly the way you want it.

Myself, I prefer the quality/price ratio at Wal-Mart and will accept that I need to learn to want exactly what they have to realize the savings they provide.

Union thugs threatening violence?

if I want to work at wal-mart, and they are willing to hire me, and we BOTH agree on “X” numbers of dollars as compensation....who elses business is it???? I’ve worked under a union twice....they were all idiots both times. I don’t need anyone to look out for my welfare and charge me to do it!!!!!Just a reminder to union members.....if you demand of your union a refund of all your dues which were spent for political purposes...they MUST refund those monies it’s the law

I remember when a few years ago you could have the butcher at Wal Mart cut or slice you a roast the way you wanted it.

Plenty of other places to get the meat the way you like it.  Try looking for a local butcher shop nearby.  I've got one nearby that sells nothing but locally grown meats from beef to pork to lamb and chicken.  This place even has organic meats if that's your style.

I get the sales flyers every week.  If Wal-Mart has a sale on something I go there, if Family Thrift has a sale on something I need I get it there, if Safeway has some stuff on sale I'm in need of, I go there.  Target also sells groceries too, I go there from time to time as well.  The Target store and the Safeway store here have the best deli shops in town.   But, if you need milk at 2 in the morning, your best bet is Wal-Mart, everything else is closed around here.

BS on that about all W-M meats being prepackaged.

My local W-M has butchers who do the trimming, packaging and labeling of fish, beef, pork and chicken. They can be seen through the window in the heavy door between the cold room and the displays of prepared products.
