The late U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s son, Ted Jr., is among the names being floated as potential candidates for Connecticut U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s seat in 2012.
Kennedy, the middle child of the late senator and his former wife, Joan, has been mentioned as a possible candidate for Lieberman’s seat, which the 23-year senator is giving up when his term ends next year. One Kennedy family friend called the 49-year-old attorney, who lives in Connecticut, a “great candidate.”
“No one knew Lieberman would be getting out. I think Teddy would be the odds-on favorite were he to enter the race,” the friend said. “But I don’t know if this is the right time for him.”
Another Kennedy insider said Ted Kennedy Jr. is a “natural” for the seat.
“Why wouldn’t he be interested in the seat?” said the source. “He is his father’s son.”
Kennedy, who lost a leg to cancer when he was 12, runs a New York law firm and is an activist for the disabled. His inspirational eulogy at his father’s 2009 funeral had some observers eyeing him for higher office. Kennedy did not return a call to the Herald yesterday.
Even before Lieberman’s retirement announcement, there was already talk Kennedy might run. Former Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat who announced this week she would challenge Lieberman, conducted a recent poll that reportedly showed her beating Kennedy in a primary. Others potentially considering the seat include Republican Linda McMahon, who lost a 2010 Senate bid, and Democrat U.S. Reps. Chris Murphy and Joe Courtney.
Isn’t there a strong respected republican in the entire state. Is McMahon the only person that can run? 2012 is an election where the Dems don’t have a solid lock on this state and there is nobody?
I think we should not panic. Some idiot throws out this Kennedy’s name. He is not in politics. He is an attorney (just as bad). Just the same, I doubt the sleezey Democrats current holding several state-wide offices will want to run. If he does enter, it could be a real dog fight of a Democrat primary.
