That was my original thought, keep the opponents looking down rabbit holes. Also, there have been so many scammers and pranksters in this whole affair, it is almost impossible to wade through it to rational Constitutional discussions. Something Awful, Anonymous and Cracked all had games to see what kind of fake docs or stories they can dump into the mix and see how far it would go. Anonymous caled it the "IRL hacking opportunity of our lifetimes". I don't doubt for a moment that the Dems are playing these things up to their advantage.
BUT... as I said, not being able to find something that the SOS claimed just a couple of years ago she personally saw and put in a safe is really interesting.
