Boeing has withdrawn from the midair tanker tender floated by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in September 2010.
That leaves only the European Airbus A330 MRTT and the Russian IL 78 in the fray for supplying six midair refuelers to the IAF, which may actually buy a few more aircraft on follow-on orders later.
At present, IAF flies six IL 78 tankers, which are doing well but are of old technology and IAF is looking for newer, better options. In fact, the Airbus 330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) had won the competition earlier but as it was regarded as too expensive, re-tendering was ordered.
Boeing has a new generation 767 under development but will not operationalise it until it gets the US Air Force's order for 179 aircraft. The evaluation for that, against the EADS Airbus A 330 MRTT is still going on, although a decision is expected in the first half of this year.

Its a bad mistake
Only way they could get a $19 billion order from China. I am positive that was one of the caveats of the Chinese deal. China = no friends with India.
Obama was already on side.
Total change in balance against America. Allies past , present and future are getting sidelined.
Every obabreath I hear the echos of Death to America.
I caught this too - $19 billion deal with China, while withdrawing from a deal already set with India? Something’s not kosher here.
What’s not kosher is Boeing transfering engine technology that will give the Chinese the ability to build endurance and reliability into their own engine manufacturing.
Well, a while back Congress made it the law American co.s could not bribe officials in foreign countries such as India and made it a criminal offense that would put a CEO of the American co. in jail.
Sounds like a good law? In the real world of deals with most foreign countries that would buy our American goods, bribes are part of the negotiations to make the sale. Boeing had to drop out. AirBus, a European co. is not covered by our laws so will get the sale.
If that is the case, how or rather why exactly could Boeing win deals to supply P-8I and C-17 aircraft to the Indian military??? How or why is still bidding to sell Super Hornets, Apaches and Chinooks to the same country?? and re-read the article, it says Boeing may rebid if it wins the USAF KC-X contract.
How does Boeing win HUGE contracts in places like Saudi Arabia???
I'm pretty sure it's GE that's doing that.
Its a bad mistake
No, it makes sense. If Boeing loses the US tanker competition, they won't have a tanker to offer India. They cannot afford to have another Japan or Italy tanker deal where development costs are incurred for only a handful of aircraft.
If Boeing wins the US tanker competition, then it can piggyback an Indian order for 6 aircraft to the USAF order for 179 aircraft.
I hate to tell you there is a high chance that the KCX contract is going to EADS
Again. And I hope this time it stands up to the inevitable Boeing protest.
The Pentagon does not have a record of changing their mind unless Boeing goes to the HASC and gives alot of campaign cash or promises Robert Gates a job.
