Live thread on the State of the State address (cause I didn't see one started)...
no access to TV right now. Snyder comes off as a slick salesman who gives a lot of fluffy feel good talk. Hopefully there will be some substance in what he says and plans on doing.
MI dashboard...
2 year budget...
elimination of Michigan business tax...
government reform at all levels...
I’m almost afraid to watch.
He needs to understand that Michigan is not Ann Arbor.
It’s streaming here:
So far Snyder is getting a LOT of standing ovations. Don’t recall this during the Moleface years.
I just don’t know. Seems like he said Ann Arbor a lot, subsidies to farmers, build a bridge, intitiatives, public private partnerships.
We’ll see I guess.
The bridge idea seems like the right thing to do - it thrilled the dems but not sure why the republicans would oppose it.
Snyder said MI did $44 billion in trade with Canada last year even with a bad economy, that’s hardly chump change.
But it’s not like NJ where Cristie where the legislature is hostile.
We have a great opportunity to really move forward with no rats to muck things up, let’s hope the GOP does a better job this time around.
I’m one of the many who were blown away and chased out of Michigan in search of employment. I wrote Snyder a letter the other day suggesting that they add another category to the hunting licenses in MI. Residents are $15, non resident is $138. I suggested that since his predessessor so diluted the state of residents, a former resident license for $15-25 would be a good idea for tourism.
Interesting idea. I left Michigan after college when the state was hit hard by the Carter economy. It would sure be nice if I could send my sons to U-M on "former resident" tuition!
Would any of us be happier to have had Virg Bernero up there last night? If so, why?
Oh, alright, when you put it that way, I suppose I can summon some enthusiasm.
To tell the truth, I was soundly asleep before the speech even started.
...reaction to Gov. Rick Snyders first State of the State address was mixed. All agree there wasnt enough detail to truly see where he plans to take the state.
Ok, glad I did sleep through it.
I’m with you there.
...” Snyder said studies show that for every $1 spent on Pure Michigan, $2 came into the state.”
To which-
If it really works $2 for every $1, then what the hell, lets take the whole budget and throw it at it, Gillman said”
That’s just plain dumb...
also-
...”He should be talking about doing bold things to save our state. Instead he talked about economic gardening and price tags on grocery products.
Also kinda dumb since he did in fact, address so many other more important issues.
and finally, this-
I liked his business-like approach, he said. I liked his focus on measurements and holding government accountable.
To which I ask-
Who could disagree with with some sort of quality initiative and with continuous improvement loops to
help eliminate government waste and redundancies except for
those who couldn’t make 2+2 equal anything at all?
I’m not a fan of Snyder obviously but even having a RINO in the governor’s mansion is a step up. It makes it easier to get signatures on bills.
He just seems to think that the whole state should be run like Ann Arbor and that simply won’t work. Hopefully his business sense will recognize that fact early.
Please correct me if my logic is flawed-
Ann Arbor is a “Cool City”. “Cool Cities” is code for “sanctuary city”. Therefore, Ann Arbor is a sanctuary city.
So much for the consolation that Snyder isn't Cox.
Sigh.
