we’re going to end up with it anyway - this is our chance to do the least damage.

Well we have it, and you'd better hope to God you don't end up with it.

Maine virtually has one beaten-down carrier (BC/BS) and they have offered to drop the individual market, after years of death-spiral premium increases.

An family can expect premium of close to $400 per person per month...$1600 per month for a family of four....some higher than that.

You willing to pay that?

I’m in California...I already get hosed. I’d like to buy from another state, but I can’t; one of the big problems obviously. I do think we’ve lost the debate on preexisting conditions however. I understand that insurance is risk-based, and what government is mandating is the opposite, but it seems like everyone I talk to is terrified about being in that category and can understand how ruinous it can be if you are. Either we come up with a high risk pool or something, but if we don’t offer a viable solution to this problem, and allow those people some coverage, it will kill our efforts in my opinion. After all, how big a number are we talking about here? Some put the figures on the truly medically uninsurable as low as 8,000. That’s a problem we should be able to deal with in a country of 307,000,000 with a $14 trillion economy. http://healthblog.ncpa.org/health-problem-quantified/
