PEOPLE who are assuming this happened in a gang or urban area, this is one of the absolute top academic high schools in L.A. They win the National Academic Decathalon (or whatever it’s called) very often.

This neighborhood is full of $1,000,000+ homes and it a VERY nice area, very suburban. Anyone would feel very safe there. There are no gangs there.

Just to let you know how kind of shocking this shooting is.

Hmm...sure seems like a nice area.

Wonder why the officer was wearing a vest? (Thank God he was)

The area around El Camino HS is indeed very nice, unlike the area around Gardena HS.

School data for 2008/2009 year
Population:
Whites 52.1%
Asians 9.7%
Hispanic 24.7%
Black 7.3%

(Keep in mind that many Hispanic and black students are bussed to the school from other areas.)

School’s 2009 Academic Performance Index: 773 (out of 1000)

About the shooting...Bad guys sometimes do come into nice areas to commit crime...

There is a cop on most LAUSD high schools and middle schools. LA Unified does have its own PD...Its HQ is near 110 freeway.
