Jeb to GOP: How to Appeal to Hispanics (Hint: Bigger Entitlements ISN'T the Answer!)
WSJ ^ | 1/17/11 | MARY ANASTASIA O'GRADY

f Republicans were to run a classified ad for their 2012 presidential candidate, it might read something like this: GOP seeks popular former two-term governor of a large state for executive post. Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated understanding of the relationship between taxes and growth, a proven record on choice in education, and an ability to draw Hispanic voters. A commitment to states' rights and the U.S. constitution is a must.

Anytime a Liberal GOPer mentions that “we need to attract more Hispanics”....that is code for ILLEGAL ALIEN AMNESTY.

Jeb Bush, and all the Bushes....support Illegal Alien Amnesty. They value the rights of Illegal Aliens over the rights of American Citizens

Illegal Alien Amnesty is Anti-American Bigotry. The Bush family are Anti-American bigots. The things they have done to Americans who have defended our borders from Illegal Alien invaders is treasonous.

It is time for the GOP to get over its Illegal Alien Fetish. Hispanics do not vote GOP because of support for Illegal Alien Amnesty....if this was the case....John McCain would be President

Any GOP who mutters “we need to bring in more Hispanics” is just pandering for and pushing Illegal Alien Amnesty. I do not support any candidate who is not 100% Border Security and 100% Illegal Alien deportation. Bush is pro-Illegal/anti-American

I have no serious beef with Jeb, he handled our Hurricanes better than Kathlene Blanco who refused using school buses:

Many private caregiving facilities that relied on bus companies and ambulance services for evacuation were unable to evacuate their charges because they waited too long. Louisiana's Emergency Operations Plan Supplement 1C(Part II, section II paragraph D) calls for use of school and other public buses in evacuations.[22] Although buses that later flooded were available to transport those dependent upon public transportation, not enough bus drivers were available to drive them as Governor Blanco did not sign an emergency waiver to allow any licensed driver to transport evacuees on school buses.[23] However, 20 year old Jabbar Gibson armed with only a standard operator's permit took it upon himself to take a school bus and drive it to Houston with 50 to 70 evacuees

Kathrina pass over our house on it's way W/NW!!

However, no more Bushes, no more Kennedys, no more Clintons!

We need new fresh air/ blood in the W.H. and I can see Sarah Palin using a new "floor sweeper"!!!

He is married to a mexican lady who he became infatuated with when he lived in Mexico as a high school exchange student.

I think there is a big difference in Mexico during Jeb's student visit and today's drug cartel's strangle hold on Mexico. I would think even Jeb would recognize that. However, no more Bushes!!!

This is my one question for Mr. Bush, the former governor of Florida. Is he willing to denounce and refuse all investment for the state of Florida that is money derived from drug smuggling, medicare fraud, insurance fraud, immigrant smuggling, and black market goods?

Let’s guess his short answer: NO.

Florida has already sold its soul to total corruption imported from other countries. Business investments and real estate investments are now funded as fronts for money laundering. Even small businesses here are just fronts for money laundering.

Many of us on this website probably agree that we wish all immigrants abided by the law. The main concerns are not a particular ethnic heritage or language, it is the ongoing culture of corruption that has permeated this country and is now accepted as embracing diversity. We don’t want corruption and crime in any language.

Couldn’t we drop the Bush Derangement Syndrome and talk about what he actually said? He has some interesting observations in here, and I think they’re worthy of discussion.

I agree, livius. I don't at all agree with EVERYTHING he said in the article (I read the piece, unlike probably 95% of the people posting here)...and he had some GOOD and some BAD stuff to say.

No more Bushes, Clinton's or Kennedys. Those ships have sailed. Jeb's not as fiscally conservative as Floridians thought and he's pro-amnesty.

NO, TO JEB. Never.

IMO, Social Security is going broke really fast because the U.S. has been subsidizing illegals from the SS “lockbox” (imaginary). The SS funds have been raided to help illegal going way back.

Jeb taught English in Mexico which is how he met his wife. Jeb would luv no borders from S. America up through Canada. He’s not very sovereign. GHWB brought up “new world order”. Whole family’s a bunch of globalists. We are suffering from globalism right now. Let’s get our country back before it’s too late. Go Marco. Goodbye, Jebbie.

Now I see a slew of "Monday-quarterbacks" here slamming Jeb Bush!!!

Do you have any other "candidates" for Governor that would have an overall better job than Jeb???

Over-all a sensible article, expresses a point of view I have supported in the past. But he just can't kick the lure of legalization, the crap about bringing people "out of the shadows." A poison pill in an otherwise interesting proposal.

"Couldn’t we drop the Bush Derangement Syndrome and talk about what he actually said?"

Anything he says regarding Hispanics is to be ignored. As to "Bush Derangement Syndrome", I hate neither Bush, I'm judging their lack of success, ESPECIALLY Daddy Bush. His failure in Gulf War I to drive into Iraq and depose Saddam led DIRECTLY to Gulf War II and to the election of Obama.

Both Georges were nice enough guys who simply didn't have what it takes to be successful as President.

My perceived slam is not entirely focused on Jeb Bush and his history as governor of Florida. It seems that many politicians in the state (of both main political parties) accept the cash and influence from corrupt individuals and criminals. They look the other way at smuggling committed at the airports, cruise ships, ports, warehouses, and business fronts. Ignoring this ongoing criminal activity just brings in more dirty money and more crime. Why is Miami the epicenter for Medicare fraud? Why are drugs and arms smuggled in through Florida? Why are pill mills rampant in Florida?

Florida's financial woes started during Jeb's time. Crist was so inept that he got married and went to a lot of ribbon cutting ceremonies and spent gobs of money in Europe "looking for jobs".

I was for Bill McCollum. Jeb can support Rubio if he wants to but Rubio's not so much an amnesty person as the entire Bush clan.

I know radicals from the panhandle who like Jeb for his hurricane record. I know conservatives who can't stand any of the Bush's on a political level.

Jeb's son, George P. Bush, slammed AMERICA whlie he was in Mexico City when amnesty was voted down. Jeb's son slammed the USA from Mexico City. Kapeesh?

Very true. My point is that he is now, and as president would tend to be, pro-amnesty.

My own mother was a Mexican immigrant, and most of my relatives are Mexicans living in Mexico.

There is so much that the Pubbies still don't quite grasp.

It is imperative that you establish standards for education, possible skills, and income levels all across the board.

Right now, our largest group of immigrants come out Latin America.

Conversely, Latin American immigrants possess the worst combination of education, language skills, and income levels of any group of immigrants that we take into this country. Over fifty percent of all (adult) Mexican immigrants that we take in still don't have the actual equivalent of a high school diploma.

Take immigrants out of Latin America that actually do meet the standards for education, income and skills, and assimilation becomes a piece of cake.

My mother was already fluent in English when she came to this country, for example. And when she entered the country, immigration was still being handled through the department of Labor.

Open borders is a terrible idea. Unlike the late 19th century/early 20th, there has never been a time where there has been such a gap between the skill/education/income levels between our own native born and much of the migrants.

Back then, a majority of our own native born adult workforce were people that still did not have the equivalent of a high school diploma ( forget about college education ). Both groups ( native born and immigrants ) were working blue collar, manual labor type jobs.

Continually taking in underclass, marginally skilled immigrants sets up big advantages for the Dems : these are precisely the kind of people that seek more government programs/services.

These immigrants will also produce children who are far more likely to drop out of school, have out of wedlock babies, and incur higher higher than average crime rates. Look at the truancy, illegitimacy, and crime rates for children of Mexican immigrants today : all are well above the norm.

Jeb doesn't realize that Hispanics are "assimilating" alright; - they're assimilating in the wrong direction. A direct result of our illogical immigration policies.
