So few government officials say what they believe and mean it.
That's part of what made it so refreshing when Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik offered his bare-knuckles assessment of public dialogue in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's mass murder in Arizona.
This is nothing new, of course, and maybe the sheriff was jumping to conclusions in his remarks on Saturday. Still, he said what he believed and he hasn't backed down.
He stood by his comments after FBI Director Robert Mueller described such a portrayal as "premature."
He's stayed true to his words despite the predictable backlash from some of the thundering voices he referenced from radio and TV talk shows.
Dupnik, a 50-year veteran of police work, was the right man in the right place to be the face of law enforcement in this horrible crime scene.
He offered the right blend of providing what information he could without jeopardizing the investigation. And he offered an opinion on something he had obviously considered in the past at a time when the most people would hear it.
It was a gutsy move.
He did not back off.
I'm glad he spoke up and happy that he refused to be swayed.

...inspite of the facts...
Perhaps the voters will offer their point of view in the next election for Sheriff ...
Is this Owens guy saying he, himself, was in on the conspiracy?
If Sheriff Dubnik knew that the rhetoric had hit the flash-point in Tucson and if his department was aware that the shooter was deranged, why didn’t he station a patrolman at the political event?
As did OJ Simpson.
Eric Fuller chose his sheriff for a role model.
Sadly, you cannot fix stupid.
Owens is another liberal around here you can’t talk to. I’m surrounded by them.
This once-great newspaper endorsed Obama. Now it's part of a huge corporation.
You Betcha Dupa, he’s a Dupnik!
It was absolutely the opposite of what his job description is. There is no rush to judgement in law enforcement. Those “refreshing” words would have you suspended then fired from the NYPD.
Sheriff Dipshit was supposed to be the “face of law enforcement” — not the face of his personal point of view — especially one that may derail criminal charges against the shooter.
While genius has its limits , stupidity does not.
Too bad his point of view was constricted by the size of the peep-hole that replaced his umbilicus, through which he looks out at the world.
Boy is this one a stretch.
He is a Sheriff.
He is suppose to be investigating.
I didn’t know his presser was really a stump speech.
Lefties just don’t understand the difference between Professional responsibilities and Personal diatribes.
When we understand that they EXPECT Zero to keep spreading the Commie/Fascist/Socialist agenda, rather than serve as POTUS the problems become clear.
Socialize Health Care: We can’t afford it...doesn’t matter, it’s the agenda of the Left.
Runaway spending...it is driving the Nat Debt through the roof......doesn’t matter, we can print money.
The Left NEVER concerns itsself about the consequences of their actions. Just the ability to pull out their list of hairbrain schemes and put a check in the box.
When Dupnik first opined about vitriol immediately following the massacre, I was glad he spilled his guts. We are witnessing his liberal house of cards coming down. I will be a tad surprised if he keeps his position through the end of his term.
