I doubt that. I’m sure they heard that a lot. There was a time after the war when it looked like Lee was going to be hanged. He was indicted for treason. But Grant went to Andrew Johnson and threatened to resign because he considered it a violation of the terms of surrender at Appomattox.

Many newspapers of the north were calling for his execution.
It is believed that Gen. Lee had read them and knew that his death was a very possible outcome of surrendering.
A true man of honor.
