2010 closed as the second highest-grossing year of all time, but it still couldn't shake an air of disappointment. Not only did 2010 end with a whimper, estimated ATTENDANCE was the LOWEST in 15 years.
The box office tally for 2010 was $10.57 billion, or around $30 million shy of 2009. That translated to an estimated attendance of 1.27 billion, which was off eight percent from 2010.
1995 was the last year to have sub-1.3 billion attendance. Since the modern attendance peak in 2002 (1.58 billion), attendance has been trending downward, but 2010 marked the second severe drop-off, following 2005.
Hollywood often failed to offer an appealing slate of movies, and there were fewer movies made available than before. In 2010, 141 movies reached nationwide release (600 locations or more), down from 158 in 2009 and the smallest number since 2001.
The top-grossing movie of 2010 was a holdover from 2009: Avatar, which made $476.9 million of its $760.5 million lifetime total in 2010.
Toy Story 3 was the second-biggest movie in 2010, drawing $415 million. Alice in Wonderland ($334.2 million), Iron Man 2 ($312.4 million) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($300.5 million) rounded out the Top Five.
Animation business was up 16 percent over 2009 to $1.49 billion, while movies presented in the 3D illusion surged to $3.27 billion (an estimated $2.1 billion of which from 3D alone).
All of the major animated titles of 2010 were shown in 3D, and the industry shoved 3D down people's throats in the wake of Avatar's success, adding enough screens to the point in December when several movies had simultaneous nationwide 3D runs.
All those 3D movies contributed to the gross, but they boiled down to more money from fewer people.

I saw all five. Toy Story 3 was good.
Haven’t been to a theater to see a movie since Dances With Wolves in 1990. There’s nothing I want to pay that kind of money for to see. And my DVD rentals are less than 5/yr. So, there’s really nothing out there for me (my wife agrees...).
I suspect two things are happening; adults are getting tired of animation and want real stories, and 3D just isn’t doing it. It may be fun to see in a theater, but can’t be repeated at home without a major expenditure. So, the mass interest isn’t there.
I don’t think they understand. Just as big a problem with the dreck that is put out is the sheer displeasure of paying big bucks to put up with impolite people.
Aka that recent article about the Marine in FL who got jumped for telling some brat to shut up.
I took my mother to the movies a few weeks ago, and she wanted to see ‘The Tourist.’ It was boring, and Angelina looks shockingly anorexic.
I haven’t been to a movie in 20 years. Screw ‘em.
Agreed. Terrible movies that aren’t worth my time or money to go see. AND rude, rude, rude people in the audience who talk, text and phone all during the movie.
The point of 3-D is to (1) be able to charge more money, (2) make people have to go to the theater to get the effect rather than wait for the DVD, and (3) make it harder to pirate movies by simply bringing in a video recorder to the theater.
Hollywood is still putting out crap, though.
It was kind of a crappy year for good movies. My girlfriend and I usually go quite often, almost every weekend in the summer, but this past year we went the least in the ten years we’ve been together.
Iron Man 2 was the only one we saw from the top five.
Hollywood, here’s a hint: make better movies.
We go to the ROXY THEATER to see movies for $3. It was built in the 1920's and shows movies after they leave the multiplex theaters. He can only show 1 movie at a time and caters to families. We just saw 'Secretariat' there.
It's fun going there. The owner wears a tuxedo and plays nice music from the 40's & 50's before the show starts. No commercials or previews.
“I suspect two things are happening; adults are getting tired of animation and want real stories”...
It’s not about what adults want, it’s all about the children and impressionable young “adults”.
Ping
I only saw ‘Iron Man 2’... and didn’t think it was all that good.
I saw The Tourist too. It was an ok movie. Fairly formulaic. I agree with you Angelina looks terribly anorexic. I couldn’t decide if she was trying to channel Audry Hepburn or Sophia Loren, in appearance at least.
Better to wait a few months and rent for $1 at a Redbox.
BIG RED!
The incessant insulting of conservatives has taken it's toll. We are more than 50% of their audience...fools!
She reminded me of Audrey Hepburn, who was also very thin. Even the classic clothing she wore in the movie could have been worn by Hepburn.
If someone offers you money to watch it, turn them down.
If at some time in the future, you go over to a friends house and see it playing on TV, leave the house immediately, and consider dropping them as a friend.
