Russia is developing a replacement for the world's most devastating intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a move that risks reviving a global nuclear arms race.
the head of Rosobshemash said the new missile would be capable of overcoming any nuclear missile shield that the Americans or indeed anyone else might build. "This applies in the fullest sense to the USA's anti-missile defence system and to Nato's (planned) European missile defence system," said Artur Usenkov.
Russia is developing the new missile despite recently negotiating a new landmark Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with the United States which will see both countries make deep cuts in their nuclear arsenals in the years ahead.
The move comes as Russia pushes ahead with the biggest overhaul of its armed forces since the fall of the Soviet Union. Vladimir Putin, the prime minister, said the Kremlin planned to spend twenty trillion roubles (£420 billion) on the task in the next decade.

I think we should give a few small tactical nukes to Chechnya.

Which nukes would quickly find ‘homes’ in various US cities... the Chets would sell them in a heart beat to AQ, if they didn’t donate them outright.
Russian is financing their arms build up from sales of their huge natural gas and oil reserves. We could do the same, except... we are not ‘allowed’ to by our environmental masters.
If your going to play that game you should give nuclear weapons to Poland. If you limit the amount of nuclear weapons your allies have then you can control strategy and hopefully a single coordinated deterrent.
You know, I agree.
That's what we should have done in Afghanistan: just blockade the border with Pakistan to keep them from escaping, and drop bombs and missiles until every cave in the mountains was sealed and nothing else was moving.
Then depart, leaving nothing behind but a simple message: if you bother us again, we'll be back and do 10 times the damage. You want to prevent it? STFU and clean up your act. You want help rebuilding? Talk to the people that got you into this mess.
We should have done something similar in Iraq the first time.
I too am tired of footing the bill for the "world's policeman". The rest of the world can go to hell without our help or hindrance.
How about Rumpelstiltskin? Or Johnjacobjingleheimerschmidt, perhaps?
Just for fun (?), suppose the unthinkable did happen and the US and Russia (or China, or...) traded somewhere in the area of 25 to 50 nukes, then what? Easily 30% of us are dead and the another 30-40% are going to die within a couple weeks. Does it matter that we died because of a bigger nuke? At that point, the only thing that would matter to me is that 1) similar or worse was inflicted on the enemy and 2) several Muslim ‘holy’ sites got hit as well.
The ‘MAD’ logic won’t stop the nut-jobs in NK, or Iran or the radical muslim. But is should give serious pause to any leader of a ‘normal’ country. So long as the US has the realisitic ability to deliver a freakishly horrific nuke nightmare (and we do), I don’t think nukes will be the weapon of choice for the Russians or Chinese.
Today, the US has enough enemies who are using economic weapons which are kicking the crap out of us. Spending billions to make the dead even deader doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Thanks george76. Gosh, it’s almost as if this is related to the Obama US disarmament treaty.
It’s not a race if our leader won’t let us run.
What leader?
Isn’t Usenkov the guy who recently claimed that a Russian invented Microsoft?
Here, here!
Now that's funny. I totally agree with your entire post.
