“There is I think four or five different legislative proposals out there now that various people have put forward that are in reaction to this that they believe would help the situation. I can tell you I’m not supportive of any of them that I’ve seen so far whether it’s a perimeter around a member of Congress in which you’re prohibited from having a weapon or whether it is additional funding for members of Congress or whether it is that we have security all the time; which frankly I don’t think we need nor do I want,” he told CNSNews.com at the Capitol on Wednesday.
“I haven’t seen anything that I think really helps the situation. I don’t know that we need more legislation and I don’t think that we need more money. I believe we just need to be a little more careful with local and county and so forth law enforcement protection when we’re outside of the Capitol and when it’s warranted.”

One of the proposals referenced by Rep. Johnson was announced by Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.), whose legislation would prohibit individuals from carrying firearms within 1,000 feet of members of Congress and other government officials.
Campbell, a member of the House Committee on Financial Services, also told CNSNews.com that he does not see a political connection to the attacker, Jared Lee Loughner, as some like Pima County Sheriff Clarance Dupnik have suggested.
“I don’t see any political connection on this at this point nor do I think that it is appropriate or constructive to try and make political connections with this. I think instead what we should be talking about is how do we prevent this sort of thing in the future. There are unstable people out there. There always will be. There are people who desire to create harm,” he told CNSNews.com.
“There are people who desire to incite problems and here in the Capitol we have tremendous protection from the Capitol police but we don’t have that when we’re in our districts and I can tell you that when I’ve done similar events to what Gabby Giffords did and I have done those that we have always had local law enforcement there and because there have been – every similar event that I’ve done in the last few years, there has been either a group or an individual or two that would cause you concern and so it’s; this isn’t a political stand, it doesn’t matter what end of the political spectrum they are on or many of them it’s not political at all. It’s ‘I want something and you owe me this.’”
I sent out an email to my congressman today to thank him for not making any knee jerk decisions.
The law could be reformed so that we can deal with the mentally ill in a more reasonable way. But there probably weren’t any bills proposed for that.
The perimeter proposal I think is really hairbrained. As if life in prison or possible death penalty for murder isn’t enough of a deterrence, and of course it would prevent any law-abiding citizen with a carry permit from taking the crazy out when/if he shows up and start shooting up the place.
I’d support secret service for them when they go to events if that would make them feel safer. I just don’t want them to stop coming out and interacting with us.

Fully agree. When committing laws were changed in the 80's? it made it very difficult to take the insane off the streets, these laws should be looked into again.
The libs will try to make it an ‘either or’ choice, ie either warehousing the mentally ill in horrid conditions, which did exist in some places, or letting them fend for themselves. There is no compassion in the latter. It just scatters the mentally ill into the woodwork of society where cameras can’t document their suffering as easily. And they undoubtedly suffer just as much or more in many cases.
This guy is a gem. I hope he goes on to higher office - Nationally.
Amen to that. Our representative government would be a completely different government if the majority of them had the common sense and good of the people at heart as Rep. Campbell does.
Insanity should no longer be a means of acquittal. It should carry it’s own sentence.
When the shrinks testify in a court and the defendant is found not guilty by reason of insanity that tells me that person should never be turned loose in society again.
It's my view that if a person is nuts enough to murder someone in cold blood their freedom should be revoked forever.
I’d be really careful about that.There is a movement amongst the left to characterize anyone on the right as mentally ill or defective.And Christians as defective.That makes it easier to have gun control. It’s already happening to our soldiers over post traumatic stress.There was a psychiatric report last year that said all people were to some degree crazy.Remember in the old Soviet Union dissidents were put away for rehab.I’d rather take my chances with nuts on the street than to put another tool in the left’s toolbox.
That is the choice. I didn't say it would be an easy thing to do but is it reasonable and compassionate to anyone, the mentally ill or the rest of us, to just let them fend for themselves?
The left should tread lightly when it comes to pointing fingers about mental stability in relation to political ideology.

You are totally understanding. I am sick of people using craziness as an excuse to kill and a defense method by lawyers. Crazy people, really crazy people, are a cancer in society and they should be treated humanely, but not allowed to run wild and take their medication on whim.
How many kids are getting attacked by demented maniacs running wild and I have had experiences with real headcases and we need ot stop being compassionate to the point of enabling. That’s what it is, enabling the self destructive to take others with them on their carzy ride through life.
