White House press secretary Robert Gibbs expressed tepid approval on Thursday for Sen. Mark Udalls idea that the parties sit together, not separate, during President Obamas State of the Union address on Jan. 25.
I haven't had an opportunity to talk to some folks around here on that. It's an interesting idea, Gibbs told reporters on Thursday. Maybe not having a physical aisle separate us would be a good thing as we talk about the state of our union, and that's everybody. That's not one side or the other. That's everyone.

Better yet, cancel the SOTU. Obama can add nothing to what he has already tele prompted. The dude is out to lunch.
The Republicans need to refuse this ruse. The Democrats no longer control every facet of the government and they now want a charade.Democrats crammed everything down America’s throat the last two years and Republicans do not need to be part of this . Stay on your side and be heard!
This is this administration’s idea of governing...pure theatrics. However, there may be an upside to this idea as apart from another repetitious snoozefest 0zer0 will deliver with clock-work precision we could get a chance to see a few interesting fist-fights.
If the opposition is disguised, we’re going to deny them a clear and longstanding way to show their displeasure with the president’s agenda, and the U.S. Supreme Court is harangued from the podium by this president, then I think we should stop the speech altogether and return to Jefferson’s preference for simply delivering a written correspondence to Congress. It’s a partisan event - the president outlines his vision, his legislative agenda. He doesn’t speak in obstuse, apolitical terms about the nation or our unity, (as if we don’t all know anyway), it’s a pep rally; any president’s greatest political stage. Either respect Congress’ and the Judiciary’s equality, or simply report to the Congress as you’re required to do Mr. chief cxecutive. This isn’t a monarchy.
yeppers.
Or sit with their backs to the commie bastard....
Every “Republican” commentator on TV seems to have fallen right in line with the libel media narrative. Amazing.
Do these people forget the seperation of powers? Gibbs doesn’t decide this. Obama doesn’t decide this.
Obama will be a GUEST in the House chamber. I assume that the Speaker of the House decides if they want to revamp the seating chart....not the Kenyan.
VERY, VERY BAD IDEA. WE WON, LET IT SHOW!
The republicans should just NOT attend. There is no requirement that the president present in person. The president can be refused entry since the House must invite him to address the joint session and can refuse him entry. IF the GOP had any nads they would disinvite him and he can deliver the SOTU in writing as has been done many times in the past.
It’s about time that we had a grown-up for president, who could go back to the original way of giving the SOTU, by sending a written document to congress. This would end the circus that began with Woodrow Wilson, and has turned into a lugubrious and insulting partisan display, full of fluff and nonsense.
Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution requires something along the lines of a SOTU, but there is no requirement for a speech.
Instead, a SOTU should be followed up with a similar document presented by each cabinet officer to the appropriate Senate and House committees, each outlining their portion of the executive branch, its functions, activities, projects, and projected needs.
It is downright offensive for the president, the executive, to proffer *his* agenda to congress. These “dead on arrival” budgets and other programs are a waste of time, and not his job. If he has such agenda items on his wish list, they should likewise be presented to the appropriate congressional committees.
This is the way the president submits cabinet, judicial and flag grade appointments to congress, so this is the way he should do other things as well. Congress works much more efficiently when it is not put on the spot.
No.
Hell no.
STFU, Gibbs.
Sheesh. What a maroon.
Civility apparently to the left means; agree with what they represent/say/do, or just say nothing at all that might upset them. Welcome to their Brave New America
Now lets all sit in a circle and hold hands.
I thought he was fired oh I me he resigned (yeah thats the ticket) Go away Gibbs
Then take the written SOTU and have an Alfred E. Neuman lookalike read it to Congress with two teleprompters. And televise it! :-)
I don’t WANT to unite with those from the dark side. They need to be defeated.
It’s too late. The country’s already psychologically divided; physical division will follow in the not-so-distant future, IMO.
Okay, let’s start a pool to see how long it takes for the republican leadership to start commenting how this sounds like a really good idea.
I’d look for Mitch McConnel to be the first.
Not no but HELL NO!
