Article must have been “scrubbed” because now it reads:
“Giffords was able to respond to simple commands” and later in the article it says:
“Giffords cannot speak because she is on a ventilator, and cannot see because of the area of her injury and the surgery requires her eyes be kept closed”
Irregardless, it is vomitous to any give implication whatsoever that Barry had anything to do with her eyes opening - An AP article was particularly sickening as it states:
“In an electrifying moment, the president revealed that Giffords, who on Saturday was shot point-blank in the head, had opened her eyes for the first time shortly after his hospital visit”
It’s scary out there.....
Found another link (LA Times) which said she had NOT opened her eyes on January 9th.

........Giffords is being kept in a medically induced coma and is not able to speak because she is intubated, but when she is periodically awakened, she is able to respond to simple commands, such as squeezing her hand and showing two fingers..........
.........The Tucson doctors refused to say which hand Giffords was able to use. She is not able to open her eyes.
At best, the different reports of whether she had opened her eyes previously, are confusing. obama's "electrifying moment" came over as quite self-serving, but it IS good to hear Rep. Giffords continues to improve.
