After delaying his swearing-in by a week, former gubernatorial candidate and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom became California's 49th lieutenant governor Monday in a low-key ceremony in line with his new position's limited duties.
Newsom told a few hundred people gathered in the state Senate chamber that he would focus on economic development and job creation while admitting that his contributions would more likely involve ideas rather than policy decisions.
"I know my role as lieutenant governor is limited," Newsom said. "I understand the constitutional restrictions. I do. But I hope I can add some value in the debate and be a conduit. And hopefully I can encourage everyone around here to take some risks."
The 43-year-old lieutenant governor had put off his swearing-in as he worked with the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors to name his successor. Newsom also appointed a replacement for former San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, who became the state's attorney general last week.
Newsom defeated incumbent Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado in November after staging a failed campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2009.
On Monday, Newsom joked about how he'll struggle to stay relevant as lieutenant governor. . . .

Newsome and Brown. They’re going to turn the ship of state around and ram the iceburg again.
Brown was born in SF and was mayor of Oakland.
Brown is married and his wife, Anne Gust, is an unpaid “special council” to his office. They married in ‘05 but dated since 1990.
