Reelecting Obama an enormous challenge, says CBC chairman
The Hill ^ | January 10, 2011 | Michael O'Brien

President Obama's reelection in 2012 won't be easy, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) says.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), the new chairman of the CBC, told the group IMPACT to expect a bruising fight to secure the president a second term.

"It's realistic for our party to understand the enormous challenge we're going to have, to get him back in the White House in 2012," Cleaver told the group, as reported on Monday by NBC's Washington affiliate.

"It will not be a landslide or an easy victory," Cleaver added. "We're going to have to scrape and battle for every vote we get."

The CBC leader's remarks underscore the uncertainty surrounding Obama's political footing going into 2012. While the president was swept into office in 2008 with Democratic headwinds, the GOP's win in the 2010 elections suggest Obama could be vulnerable to a strong Republican challenger.

Cleaver said the president has been the a victim of impossibly high expectations for his first two years in office.

"The majority of Americans placed inflated expectation on candidate Obama and some even placed all of their hopes and dreams in him," the Missouri Democrat said. "No human being could have performed at the level of expectation in such a short period of time."

Polls have suggested that some potential Republican challengers are within striking distance of beating the president, if not enjoying a slight lead. But with the 2012 campaign only beginning to get off the ground, those numbers are fluid.

Some of Obama's advisers are expected to begin formally setting up his reelection operation in Chicago some time in the first half of the year.

Emanuel Cleaver, whom I affectionately refer to as Eldridge, knows the problems ahead. When I asked him ten years ago if he was going to have a cabinet position in the algore administration, he deferred as usual in his reply, saying he really wanted to just retire to his cabin in the woods. Maybe he'll have that chance now that Missouri is redistricting with the loss of a House seat. Who will lose? KC of St. Louis?

"We're going to have to scrape and battle for every vote we get."

Hey! Isn't he inciting violence? Battle? Scrape! Also, it isn't as though Obama innocently got people to have enormously high expectations of fulfilling all hopes and dreams for his followers - such as paying their mortgages and filling their gas tanks. This was a means to an end, as it is with all communists promising the world and then delivering misery.

If the Repubs get it together and do their job, any thought of re-election of Oba-Mao will be gone before 2012.

I’ve got news for Cleaver. Its going to be a challenge to keep Barry in office until 2012. forget about after that. I sit in delicious anticipation of Darryl Issa and his investigations.

I have been hoping that a few states would institute a requirement for candidates to prove their qualifications before they can go on the ballot for the 2012 election but it doesn’t look as if that will happen.

Barack the Kenyan’s exploitation of the tragedy in Tucson will get him and his commie ‘RATS a temporary bounce in the polls but it won’t last. Americans can see right through his bull****.

"It will not be a landslide or an easy victory," Cleaver added. "We're going to have to scrape and battle for every vote we get."

Let's take stock. In 2008, Obama had the following going for him:

1. The unanimous, uncritical and unconditional love of the drive-by media.

2. A Bush administration enjoying a disastrous second term -- detested by liberals, unbeloved by conservatives.

3. John McCain -- the worst Republican candidate for the Presidency since Alf Landon -- for an opponent. Literally nobody was excited at the prospect of a McCain presidency.

4. The "First Black President" nonsense, which fueled white guilt and even appealed to many soft-head RINOs.

5. A curiously well-timed economic crisis caused by the collapse of two "Government Sponsored Enterprises" -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

And, despite all these advantages, Obama's victory was well short of a landslide.

In 2012, he'll still have the media. But he'll also be running on four years of failure. And the other advantages won't be operative.

If the elected Republicans can just stay on the straight and narrow AND we nominate a decent conservative candidate, Obama will only be a bad memory in 2013.

He lied to people (with the help of the Dem media) to get elected; I don’t see how his own party runs him as their candidate in 2012. They’ll find some reason for him not to run (like he just loves his family too much to be away from them so much, or more likely a health issue), and put a white Dem in centrists’ clothing up as their candidate.
