I have a Glock 9 millimeter, and Im a pretty good shot.
The statement, by Representative Gabrielle Giffords, was made in an interview last year with The New York Times, when tensions were running high in her district. The quip about her ability to defend herself speaks to the passionate gun culture in Arizona that crosses political lines and is notable for its fierceness, even in the West.
Indeed, the federal judge who was killed on Saturday in the shootings here, John M. Roll, had his wife and many people who worked with him take lessons at Marksman Pistol Institute, an indoor range downtown. One of the doctors who operated on Ms. Giffords after the shooting rampage was a member at Pima Pistol Club, an outdoor range where homeland security and local law enforcement were practicing on Monday.
Arizonas gun laws stand out as among the most permissive in the country. Last year, Arizona became only the third state that does not require a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The state also enacted another measure that that allowed workers to take their guns to work, even if their workplaces banned firearms, as long as they kept them in their locked vehicles.
In 2009, a law went into effect allowing people with concealed-weapons permits to take their guns into restaurants and bars.
It is unclear whether the attack on Saturday will do anything to shift attitudes about guns in this state. But at the federal level, gun control advocates have quickly zeroed in on the high-capacity ammunition clip used by the suspected gunman, Jared L. Loughner (pronounced LOF-ner).
Gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds were banned under the federal assault weapons ban until the statute expired at the end of 2004.

Our neighbor Mexico's gun laws stand out as some of the most restrictive in the world.
How are they doing with the gun violence?
This will be one of many tests for the new Congressional (R) majority.
Do they do what’s right and kill new gun control bills?
Or do they cave in to political correctness and pass them?
It’s been proven again and again that the majority of their constituents DO NOT want more restrictions on their 2nd amendment rights. Do they listen to their consituents, or to the NYT?
Its too bad she did not use her 9 to defend herself against the nutcase who attacked her....
She should have been carrying...on her hip...
We have to be armed at all times, Utopia is a dream and it sucks... Kill bad guys or die...
Evil Exists.... get over it....
How I wish we could go back to the days when you could strap a Colt Peacemaker to your hip and you wouldn’t be considered dressed if you didn’t.

From what I've read he shot her first and it was the equivalent of a "sucker punch"
Even if you have one strapped to your side, there's no escaping one in your face.
In all fairness this guy apparently came out of nowhere, walked up and just unloaded. I doubt being strapped would have made much of a difference here.
Even though you are prepared, an ambush is possible. I carry, but if someone behind me puts a handgun to my head, I’ll never know.
My dad went to an agricultural high school in the 1930's. He talked about how he and his brother and other kids would bring their shotguns and .22's to school in the morning, set them in the corner, and hunt for birds and squirrels and such on the way home from school.
It was called, "dinner".
It wasn't considered weird or crazy, it was just what people did. And there weren't any school shootings back then, that I know of.
It isn't guns that have changed, it is peoples' attitudes that has changed.
They're not toys, they're tools. They're not "what you saw at the shoot-em-up action/adventure movie" yesterday, they're to be treated with respect, like other tools.
In fact, I think that if high schools had Rod and Gun Clubs as extracurricular activities, properly instructed, it would solve a lot of the gun crime troubles we have.
But you know the Libbies would go ballistic over that idea.

Mrs. Prince of Space
Do they want to get re-elected?
Not a problem. Learning is a continuing process, unless you are a liberal.
The only stupid question is the one unasked.
You are right, I am wrong...
thanks for setting me straight on this...
My dumb ass mouths off from time to time...
I got wound up ( again ) and could not fathom the scenario...
