Exclusive: Loughner Friend Explains Alleged Gunman's Grudge Against Giffords
Mother Jones ^ | Jan. 10, 2011 | Nick Baumann

Posted on 01/10/2011 3:40:55 PM PST by ruination

At 2:00 a.m. on Saturday—about eight hours before he allegedly killed six people and wounded 14, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), in Tucson—Jared Lee Loughner phoned an old and close friend with whom he had gone to high school and college. The friend, Bryce Tierney, was up late watching TV, but he didn't answer the call. When he later checked his voice mail, he heard a simple message from Loughner: "Hey man, it's Jared. Me and you had good times. Peace out. Later."

That was it. But later in the day, when Tierney first heard about the Tucson massacre, he had a sickening feeling: "They hadn't released the name, but I said, 'Holy shit, I think it's Jared that did it.'" Tierney tells Mother Jones in an exclusive interview that Loughner held a years-long grudge against Giffords and had repeatedly derided her as a "fake." Loughner's animus toward Giffords intensified after he attended one of her campaign events and she did not, in his view, sufficiently answer a question he had posed, Tierney says. He also describes Loughner as being obsessed with "lucid dreaming"—that is, the idea that conscious dreams are an alternative reality that a person can inhabit and control—and says Loughner became "more interested in this world than our reality." Tierney adds, "I saw his dream journal once. That's the golden piece of evidence. You want to know what goes on in Jared Loughner's mind, there's a dream journal that will tell you everything."

A little insight into Loughner by an "old and close friend" who received a phone message from the shooter hours before the incident.

The guy is deranged but his unanswered question is a good one:

The question was, ‘What is government if words have no meaning?’”

I bet this idiot believed, heart and soul, in inception.

IMHO, he was stark, raving mad, a real loon...but also capable of planning and carrying out such a crime. It is really amazing that he as as accurate and effective as he was while rapid firing that glock in the crowd.

We know he bought it relatively recently...was he training at home...on a range...dod he have some one he wnet shooting with?

He was also very left leaning and that's something that will only be heard here, on Fox to some extent, Hannity and Rush and the like. Will be ignored by the admin and by the DNC as they rush to not let this crisis go to waste and try and foist more of their liberal/leftist ideology on all of us.

I hope not to offend anyone, but what kind of dink man keeps a dream journal? Between working a job, chasing skirt, and doing normal stuff any 22 yr old is doing, keeping a dream journal by itself is problematic.

An extremely, mentally disturbed “dink man” does.

My son is 23 years old and you are correct. He’s working, chasing skirt and playing video games.

Not a bad question at all, but one any politician would be unable to answer truthfully.

What I don’t get about the left is their worshiping of the government. It is a man made institution made of people, some of whom are good, some bad. In fact, they tend to despise churches, which are pretty close to the same thing. Not all churches will be “run” by Christ.

Government has never been the answer to man’s need for meaning.

Rush quoted this ‘What if words have no meaning?’ today?

Which is the quote?

What? No skull shrine in the yard?

I make it my business to stay up on what my children are doing. Especially so if they are living at home or on my dime. Sure I let them make their own mistakes, but I determine the cut-off from needed mistakes to gain experiences versus those with looming consequences.

Stuff like buying guns, smoking dope, making death threats, and getting kicked out of community college are pretty good examples.

What parent could be so disconnected from what their kid has been up to?

“Peace out”

Isn’t that a phrase used pretty much exclusively by liberals? Or am I way off base on that? I’ve seen Geraldo Rivera sign off with it many times.

Right here in the SF Bay Area there are actually high schools in which teachers in certain classes including psychology actually require their students to keep a dream journal.

...then again...what are diaries in part?

=8-)

Is this really all that unusual? Really? Aren't most parents busy doing their "own thing" and too busy to have much idea of what their kids are up to?

I'm serious. Isn't that the new norm? Two working parents and the kids are left to pretty much fend for themselves. It certainly is the case when I look around.

His dream journal is a journal of his delusions, not dreams while sleeping. The illiterate are those that do not have “lucid dreams” aka delusions.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this “friend” is his drug supplier; thus the “He was clean” statement to cover his butt so that he doesn’t get caught in the fallout.

That is what is wrong with the standard “insanity” defense. Insane people commit crimes all the time with full knowledge of what they are doing, and what the logical consequences are.
