It didn't take long after 20-year-old political intern Daniel Hernandez emerged as the hero of Saturday's mass shooting in Arizona for the cynics to figure out the angle. As a poster on Free Republic remarked, "Look shortly for the leftist media to push the 'Gay, Hispanic-American Intern saving the Liberal Congresswoman's life from the Tea Party' angle." Well, Freepers, here it is!
It's not quite that simple, of course. However we try to understand the causes of the tragedy in Arizona and the political rhetoric of violence, it seems clear that there's considerably more to the disturbing story of shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner than can be explained by pointing to a few wry Sarah Palin quips. And if simply being gay and Latino were grounds for heroism, Ricky Martin's face would be on the $10 bill.
Daniel Hernandez is, by any measure, an extraordinary young man. He had been interning in Gabrielle Giffords' office only five days when an event at a local Safeway thrust him into the international spotlight for his quick thinking, bravery and competence in the wake of unimaginable violence. On the "Today" show Monday, Matt Lauer explained how Hernandez drew upon his high school training as a certified nursing assistant to check on the pulses of other shooting victims before noticing the severity of Giffords' wounds and, as he puts it, prioritizing her. He put her upright and held her in his lap as he applied pressure to staunch the blood. "I could tell she had a severe gunshot," he said. "I just tried to do my best until emergency medical services could arrive. My focus was on making sure I was doing everything I could to take care of her." Even when the ambulance arrived, he stayed with her, because "I saw my job then as not taking care of her medical needs but taking care of her emotional needs. I tried to comfort her and make sure she knew she wasn't alone. I let her know I was going to try to contact her parents and her husband."

If any good can come out of something as unfathomably horrible as Saturday's mass shooting, let it be that it shakes up a few preconceptions. That it shows the world that a hero can be gay or straight, can speak English or Spanish or both, and that stupid laws can exist in places full of good people. And anyone who has any doubt of what kind of person deserves to serve next to him in battle, or stand before their community and declare their love, or go to school, or walk down the street without being asked for paperwork needs to hear that and remember that, again and again until it sinks in. Yes, the "gay Hispanic American" saved a life on Saturday, and yes, it does matter.
gay, hispanic, all minorities= good, lovable
white, male,Christian= bad, ie "haters"
Every damn detail needs to be twisted to fit the lefts political agenda.
The left has been so predictable for so long I think everyone knows whats going on here, fortunately.
We live in their heads absolutely rent free. That’s a beautiful thing.
I suspset, being unarmed: taking cover like anyone else would do initially. Hey they guy got in there as quick as he could given the cirmcustances and did his job.
And apparently did it well. So don’t go down that road, okay?
Meanwhile the federal judge who was killed has basically been relegated to non-entity status.
They went down that road. We're simply noticing it.
While one of the heroes may have been Gay, let us not forget that the KILLER was ALSO GAY!
Just curious, did the reporter ask him if he was a homosexual or did they just assume it?
I’m not sure what you’re saying. I was responding to an apparent attack ( oh I cant use that word now) on the guy, a medical professional, who did his job to save a life.
If you’re talking about the left’s attack (there’s that word again) on Sarah, the Tea Party, apple pie and mom, then have at it. But leave the speculation about the medical guy and what he was doing while a mad man was blasting away, out of it. He played his part, the one he was trained to do and leave it at that.
>>>>We live in their heads absolutely rent free. Thats a beautiful thing.
So much open space... It’s a thing to behold. :)
Some here, myself included, are simply making note of the left's propensity to use any opportunity to turn any subject, to use any act, to burnish a pet political cause.
Its the same impulse that has them accusing their political opposition of being responsible in this case.
Their hair coloring seminar was interrupted.
My gaydar was going off like mad when Megyn Kelly was interviewing him.
I asked Mrs. JohnnyP why so many homosexuals have that speech pattern.
Her reply: “It’s a spirit”.
Yeah, but to me the kid’s not the issue. Its certain medias flagrant and inappropriate use of this event to try to promote his lifestyle.
LOL,
Sounds like Mary Elizabeth is spending her time lurking in the shadows at FR.
Get ready for the backlash from LameStreamMedia and the Left on this.
“If any good can come out of something as unfathomably horrible as Saturday’s mass shooting, let it be that it shakes up a few preconceptions.”
What preconceptions? If anything those who label and celebrate people as something other then male or female, or basically as human beings, are the ones with preconceptions. I hate it when they stereotype one group and then project their own sterotyping behavior onto others. (eye roll)
