My gut check tells me that there were many locals on duty to specifically provide security for the congresswoman’s meet-n-greet event. There were none where they were supposed to be. Where were they? I’ve never been to a local political event involving direct constituancy contact where the local or state police were not within ten feet of the points of contact.

Babeu in a very measured way called Dupnik out. Said as a law enforcement officer it’s their responsibility to tone and calm down as opposed to coming in and throwing around unfounded allegations.

Babeu is a very reasoned, articulate man whom Pinal County is very blessed to count as their sheriff.

He basically said that the sheriff was fueling the flames and trying to make this shooting political, and law enforcement is supposed to calm down the situation and stick to the facts.

Basically, Sheriff Babeu states that as a law enforcement officer, Sheriff Dupnik’s duty is to try and calm the people of his area down and not contribute to the rhetoric that is going around. He is also taken aback as to how Sheriff Dupnik is willing to go on TV and make baseless claims without all of the facts coming in first. Sheriff Babeu goes on to say that taking part in a political attack and using this tragic incident to voice his(Sheriff Dupnik) own political leanings and agenda do nothing to heal the hearts of the people of Arizona of whom are mourning the dead and are fearful for their Congresswoman's heath.

In a nutshell, Sheriff Babeu believes that Sheriff Dupnik is being derelict in his duties as a lawman by choosing to utilize this incident for his own and his party's(Democrats) personal gain. He didn't say that directly, but that is what I took away from it.

He said that one of the first things law enforcement does when they arrive on a crime scene is try to calm things down and this man is doing just the opposite by ratcheting it up and trying to inject political opinions into a situation.

I'll paraphrase: This sheriff thinks the other sheriff is a unprofessional moron.

Basically he said not it was wrong to say that there is a political motive in the shooting as the facts are unknown as to why it happened. He wants people to calm down and left the facts play out. He said the was wrong of the other sheriff to say the State was racist and the capitol of bigotry. At this time a sheriff should be trying to focus on the investigation and focused on calming people’s rush to judgment instead of inflaming it.

First responder philosophy off the top of my head:

1. arrive

2. assess

3. alarm

4. evaluate

5. enter

6. stabilize

7. initial medical assessment

8. communication

9. long term monitoring

10. document and debrief

Alot of things happen during this process and the officials in charge should keep focused on the task at hand. This Sheriff was spouting off about two thirds of the way through the process and tainted his own investigation. Not fit for the job in my opinion.
