Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Funeral of 9-Year-Old Tucson Shooting Victim

Speaking of hatred that knows no bounds or party affiliation, the Westboro Baptist Church, famous for picketing the funerals of slain members of the American military, has announced plans to disrupt the funeral of the youngest of yesterday’s shooting victims, 9-year-old Christina Greene.

The child was among the six fatalities that resulted from a shooting spree in Tucson by Jared Lee Loughner that left Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords hospitalized with a brain injury. Christina, who was the granddaughter of former Philadelphia Phillies manager Dallas Green, had just been elected to the student council at school. She wanted to attend the event to see real government in action.

Westboro’s founder, Fred Phelps has run in several Kansas Democratic Party primaries, but has never won. In his most successful bid, as a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1992, he received 31 percent of the vote.

Phelps was an enormous supporter of Al Gore 1988 Democratic Party primary election and in 2003 wrote a letter to Saddam Hussein, praising his regime for being

The American Baptist and the Southern Baptists have a heirarchy of sorts, but Phelps is a “Primitive Baptist” and they are independent.

He is also a Calvinist, which is unusual for Baptists.

I don't know anything about the American Baptists but I can assure you, that the "hierarchy" stops at the Minister of the local church, within the Southern Baptist Convention.

Southern Baptists are autonomous and about half the member churches of the S.B.C. are "Calvinists", as is my church.

By Hierarchy I meant the convention and ‘disfellowshipment’ not a hierarchy like the Morg have, I am aware that it is different.

We used to go to a church that was ABC with an SBC pastor, and they weren’t Calvinists. The church was dissolved after the pastor sold it for $250,000 to an SBC church (it was worth 6 million).

I have never heard of a Baptist who believes in predestination, that is interesting.

Our heavenly father is using Phelps to make the point that the devil is real and among us.

Actually Satan is using the liberal democrat lawyer and his falsely named "church" to discredit the good name of "Baptist."

IIUC, the Baptists don't have a central authority which could eject Westboro and strip it of use of the name?

They don't. The bad side to that is that stuff like this can happen. The good side to it is it keeps 99.9% of Baptist churches from going Episcopalian on their members.

Well, if they ever succeed in starting a riot, can we at least nail the Phelps shakedown artists for incitement?

I read it in an S.B.C. publication and am just taking their word for it, that it’s about 50-50 (member churches within the S.B.C.)

I’d be hard pressed to find a source for it. Thanks for not asking.

Whichever way you believe personally, I believe that you and I will meet in Heaven and we can have a discussion. The Master will straighten it out for us.

There are crooks and thieves everywhere you look.

I never weigh in on the ped-Priests threads, in my 65 years, I'm well aware that Baptists and others have their share of them.

I try real hard to love everybody and believe me, there are members in my church that aren't all that easy to love. I loves 'em anyway.

Quoted from Wiki re the "pastor" of Westboro...

Phelps is a disbarred lawyer, founder of the Phelps Chartered law firm, a past civil rights activist in Kansas, and a Democrat who has five times been a candidate for political office in Kansas Democratic Party primaries.

I don't know from where Democrat Phelps gets his marching orders, but one suspects some left wing buddies within the Democratic party, n'est ce pas?

I’d love to see Fred Phelps and company try their antics when a mostly black church has a funeral for a soldier killed in action in Iraq. THANK YOU!! My thoughts exactly. 2 possible answers IMO, 1) it may be as simple as what the "alledged" wise guys I grew up around in the Pelham Bay section of da Bronx would say: "sensa couliones". They're the lowest forms of ambulance chasers "cruisin' for a bruisin'" by trying to provoke what they see as "soft" targets. 2) Could be SOP from the Saul Alinsky and Cloward-Piven rulebooks where the left makes unholy alliances with them if they agree to stay out of "da hoods".

As I understand it, there is an exception to the First Amendment carved out for “fighting words.” Truly inciteful speech can therefore be penalized, and maybe WBC’s conduct falls into this particular category.

Some anonymous vigilante justice is what I had in mind.

You got it. Anonymous and out of the public eye. No one to sue.
