He is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. He was designated a naval aviator in 1987, and flew 39 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm. He was a test pilot before being chosen as an astronaut. Currently he holds the rank of captain in the U.S. Navy.
