Alert to hoarders: old light bulbs soon to vanish ( Canada )

Standard incandescent light bulbs are now an endangered species.

A phase-out underway means consumers who haven't already made the switch will soon have to start buying more energy efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs instead.

B.C. banned new imports of old 75- and 100-watt incandescent bulbs Jan. 1, although wholesalers and retailers are allowed to continue selling off their existing stock.

"A lot of people don't like the colour of the light with the CFLs," he said, adding some of his customers are hoarding old bulbs.

"They're used to turning a light on and it's on. CFLs start dim and get brighter, so they're not as convenient."

Some critics challenge the environmental case for CFLs.

They question whether the bulbs last as long in practice – when people turn them on and off frequently – as they do in continuous-use tests.

And dead CFL bulbs are considered household hazardous waste because they each contain about four mg of mercury.

Went to Home Depot the other day and bought enough clear, hundred watt bulbs to light up the entire neighborhood. And I plan to buy more.

If the house GOP had their act together, they would roll this back right away. It would be supported by everyone.

Only problem with that is the last factory to manufacture incandescent bulbs in the USA closed recently. Of course, should the GOP do as you suggest (HAH!!), I'm sure China would fill that void.

I’ve started stocking up also. I have about 15 packages so far with about a 50/50 split of 60 watt and 3-way. I plan on stocking up on a few packages of appliance bulbs, 100 watt and a couple other varieties before I’m done.

Of all the environmentalist loony ideas, I think getting rid of lightbulbs may be the looniest. I haven’t met one person who supports it.

If these bulbs are such hazardous household waste that time-consuming and sometimes expensive efforts must be taken to clean up one that has broken on a floor what is going to be done when all the houses and buildings are using them and then natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes come along and destroy whole towns full of them?

When I was a kid, we used to break thermometers and let the mercury roll around on our palms. I wonder, can I get disability for my second head and sixth finger?

Mercury in its liquid form is not any thing as toxic as in its vapor form.

You can get incandescent light bulbs rated for 25,000 hours that are used by the hospitality industry. If you use them for an average of 7 hours a day they’ll burn out in just a little under 10 years and cost about a buck or less per bulb depending on how many you buy.

Once you stock up all you’ll have to do is watch out for the light bulb police who’ll be monitoring everyone who might be using those unauthorized, evil incandescents!

Yes it was in the Fall that it closed, right? I heard 700 people lost their jobs that day. And the CFLs are made in China. Disgusting
