Gay group in, values groups out at CPAC (Heritage, FRC, AFA, CWA, etc)
Washington Times ^ | 1/6/2011 | Valerie Richardson

Social and economic conservatives have worked together under the mantle of the Republican Party since Ronald Reagan made them the core of his 1980 coalition, but the alliance may now be fraying.

Some of the nation's most prominent social conservatives are sending a message to their economic brethren by dropping out of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in response to the decision to include GOProud, a gay conservative group, as a participating organization.

"The base-line reason is that homosexuality is not a conservative value," said Bryan Fischer, the American Family Association's director of issue analysis. "It's the conservative PAC, not the libertarian PAC."

Sponsored by the American Conservative Union (ACU), the CPAC gathering traditionally has been a marquee event on the conservative political calendar. This year's conference is scheduled to run Feb. 10 to 12 in Washington and will feature leading Republican presidential contenders Haley Barbour, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and John Thune.

Two CPAC board members contacted by The Washington Times said they were distressed by the departure of key social conservatives and considered it a high priority to have them participate in the 2012 conference. At the same time, they said, they knew of no plans to downgrade GOProud's status or otherwise modify the program.

"I don't think it would be appropriate for me to comment, but I just wish none of this had happened," said CPAC board member Cleta Mitchell. "I hope we can have a good CPAC this year and resolve this so that we can bring everyone back into the fold next year."

Other social-issues groups opting to avoid the conference include the Heritage Foundation, the Family Research Council, the Center for Military Readiness, the American Family Association, the American Principles Project, the Liberty Counsel and the National Organization for Marriage.

The GOP would do well to remember this lesson from Massachusetts:

April 8, 2009
New Mass. Republican Party Chairman says party will no longer oppose same-sex “marriage”, abortion, other “social issues”

Nov 4, 2010
Mass. Republicans lose ALL statewide & Congressional races

Anytime homosexuality raises its ugly head it winds up being destructive to that society and sends it into a slow degenerative spiral. They can deny it, but it's a documented fact.

They can try and sugar coat themselves by playing the name change game but as the saying goes "a rose by any other name is still a rose" and a homosexual is a homosexual. Picture in terms of what they do and then picture the name switch to "Gay" and tell me which term aptly describes the conduct.

I really don't care to get into a lengthy discussion on this type of issue.

See, if that Navy carrier cmdr who was relieved for allowing porno movies, had been demonstrating blow-jobs instead, he’d still have his command. (That’s pretty damn close to the truth.)

When is CPAC going to start endorsing, praising and glorifying drug addiction and alcoholism the same way they do for homosexuality? It is very very obvious that CPAC has been taken over by NON conservatives (Think of the GOP with Ken Mehlman). Another homo lifestyle lover is Erick Erickson of Red State website. They need to be called out on it.

CPAC is dead... they are a bed of pit vipers... no candidate with a real chance is speaking there, according to this article... who is not there speaks volumes. You republican party hacks that have sewn your lips to the butts of the rockefeller wing are on notice... death watch... you have a few months... fix it or go the way of the whigs... 2010 was just the beginning.

...so CPAC panders to the bitchy yappy 2%'ers to the exclusion of the other 98%...

Yeah...that'll work.

Wasn't there a National 'Tea Party' convention last year? Perhaps that should become an annual event, and it would give these organizations a new conservative venue at which they can assemble...

GOProud is NOTHING next to the guy Grover Norquist is bringing to CPAC: Suhail Khan and a group called Muslims for America - who is on the BOARD of the ACU and whose father, Mahboob Khan, leader of a large mosque in Santa Clara, Calif., had allowed Osama bin Laden's No. 2 man, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, to raise money there. We have already canceled our plans to attend because of this jihadist.

I’m shocked to find out I’m a Libertarian After all these years...

Funny how that works. In just a few decades I went from being a "Conservative" to a "Right Winged Radical Extremist" just by keeping the same political and social (moral) values.

From time to time, I’ve flirted with the idea of shelling out the $1000 or so it would take me to attend the CPAC convention.

Not anymore. There is not a snowball’s chance I’d go now.

"I hope we can have a good CPAC this year and resolve this so that we can bring everyone back into the fold next year."

Resolve it? What is there to resolve? Either separate yourself from the homo rights group, or don't. Just note the consequences of your actions.

I am a Heritage Foundation member and I support them financially. I'm very pleased (and not at all surprised) that they backed out of the conference.

This is a good sign. Staunchly conservative orgs need to man up and say a resounding “NO” to the homofication of society - and walking is a powerful statement. We should all do more of this in our daily lives. (Wells Fargo, Home Depot, do you hear us?)

Oh, let it be so. Only, let them die regardless. If you have to cajole and threaten our R leaders into taking a conservative stand, their heart obviously isn't in it. They aren't operating out of principle.

Good riddance to them.
