Wakefield's paper linking MMR vaccine and autism a fraud
LA Times ^ | January 5, 2011 | By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times

Posted on 01/05/2011 8:25:06 PM PST by Melissa 24

Dr. Andrew Wakefield's 1998 report in the journal Lancet purporting to show a link between autism and the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella "was based not on bad science but on a deliberate fraud," says Dr. Fiona Godlee, editor in chief of BMJ, formerly the British Medical Journal, in an editorial published Tuesday. The editorial accompanies the first of three reports by British investigative journalist Brian Deer that document how Wakefield manipulated data in his attempts to prove something that he "knew" before he started his research. Most of the information in the reports has been published previously, but the recent publication of the General Medical Council's 6-million-word transcript of the hearing in which Wakefield's license to practice medicine in Britain was revoked allowed the editors of BMJ to peer-review Deer's reports and confirm the extensive falsifications in the original Lancet paper.

*snip*

"The sad thing is, his work has influenced a lot of people," said Dr. Peter Hotez of the Sabin Vaccine Institute in New York City. "If you do a Google search of vaccines, so much of what you see are anti-vaccine sentiments using Wakefield's work as a basis for it, and as a result, children are having vaccines withheld. It's tragic."

Talk to a person crippled by polio. That should tell you something too.

I’d like to know what the children died of due to a lack of immunizations. This article is the most specific I have read as it states that four children died, usually its just a vague “children died”. But this still doesn’t reveal the exact disease(s).

I have a 5 month old and am very torn about what to do. I’ve held off vaccinations to this point but am somewhat fearful of him catching a deadly disease. My daughter had a horrid reaction to a group of vaccines when she was about 20 months old. She was like a zombie for 5 days...of our 5 children, she is the most vivacious so it was a terrifying 5 days. She didn’t smile, chatter or laugh and if you waved your hand in front of her face, she didn’t even blink. I thought we had lost her forever. I believe it was divine intervention that brought her back.

I have to agree. Some of the reasons for the shots seem ridiculous.

My son was born totally normal and beautiful. He met all his milestones right on time until after the MMR. What else could make a child poop out baseball sized black stools, hard as a rock, lose their speech, begin to have strange neurological deficits? Something gets to their brains and, in many cases, to their gut ...something. What is it? He still can’t eat or drink milk or wheat w/o having a very strange odor and pattern to his stools. We have to always put him on a gluten free/casein free diet or give him digestive enzymes.

If the vaccine program was ever implicated in autism, the world would come to a screeching HALT.

We can’t let that happen, now, can we?

I understand your opinion, but you are uninformed. You’re taking your info from Yahoo or AP. I’m not speaking from the outside. I’ve seen this issue face to face, and am seeing it today, in my family. Your simplistic response is noted.

They don’t put mercury in children’s vaccines anymore.

Heh! Just like what the "global warming" scientists did!

The research exposing this fraud has been in the literature for a couple years now. The LAT only has the literacy to read editorials though so they had to wait for someone to digest reality for them.

Better late than never I suppose.

You can search out a DAN (Defeat Autism Now) physician in your area, or nearby. That would be a start. Generation Rescue is also a good starting point. Good luck. Detox/chelation can be hard on the kidneys. Be very careful.

We requested at the hospital not to have our preemie baby vaccinated against Hep B...I found out 2 weeks ago that they did it anyway. We both remember the nurse entering that we declined the vaccination. It’s the only one he has had. Now what do we do? I was so mad I cried. He spent two weeks in the ICN just struggling to breathe and eat, his body didn’t need to be fighting to make anti-bodies against a disease he had no chance of catching.

Take your anecdotes elsewhere. We don't need scientific illiterates smearing the credibility of FR with meaningless drivel such as yours.

Thimersol is the product used to extend the life of vaccines. It contains mercury. This issue has been out there for awhile.

Interesting arrangement of words. Mind if I copy it to paste elsewhere?

I will give you full credit.

No argument btw.

Nothing worse than slobbering incompetents pretending to know what they are talking about. I hope no one takes your gibberish seriously. They could endanger their children if they took your ignorance seriously.

The unfortunate argument against that, is a very dear friend of mine paints with her mouth because she is a paraplegic from the polio vaccination.

I had a very long discussion with my daughter’s pediatrician when she was 18 months old...Polio was the one that I was concerned with. He said Polio is gone in the western hemisphere, except for those countries that use the oral vaccination still, and then it’s contagious to others. That’s the only reason you see it periodically in the news, and it is always associated with the oral vax.

The doctor said I should be more concerned with tetanus, which is interesting since hot water and soap, Neosporine and oral antibiotics are so readily available.

He also said that he was required(???) to continue to inform me of the vaccination schedule, and that I had to decline it every time I brought my daughter in. We simply stopped going for wellness check ups - and only go if there is a need. (amazingly enough, the only need was to get cactus quills out one time...she’s just never sick except for a minor cold here and there.)

The only people who condemn the studies come from pharma backgrounds, and government types who want to nanny our children for us.

I'm not from a pharma background, and I'm not associated with the government. I have looked at several studies, and the conclusions are very clear from large, well done studies. Vaccines have nothing to do with autism.

We agree to disagree then - however - your pharma backed studies, should not legislate what I do for my child.

Be my guest. I have a special place for people who may endanger other peoples' children by spreading error in the healthcare domain. It just isn't worth whatever juvenile thrill these uneducated people get by pretending to know more than the legitimate medical community.

Sort of like the Algores of medical global warming.

As I’ve said I’ve seen this up close, with a friend of the family, and am currently seeing it with one of my twin girls. I believe vaccines work but have side-effects on certain persons. If you have something to add, add it. Otherwise, FO.

I am aware thimerosal is a preservative, it used to be used in the contact lens saline solution I used for decades. However, it is no longer used in children's vaccines. From the FDA website:

Since 2001, all vaccines recommended for children 6 years of age and younger have contained either no thimerosal or only trace amounts, with the exception of inactivated influenza vaccines, which are marketed in both the preservative-free and thimerosal-preservative-containing formulations. Thimerosal-preservative free influenza vaccine licensed for use in children six to 59 months of age is available in limited supply. Nevertheless, FDA is in discussions with manufacturers of influenza vaccine regarding their capacity to increase the supply of vaccine without thimerosal as a preservative.
http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/vaccines/QuestionsaboutVaccines/ucm070430.htm

So even though there is no evidence thimerosal causes any problems, it has been removed.
