Khrushchev didn’t foresee Russians becoming Christians and being able to talk with foreigners freely. I talk to friends from Russia every day.
Looks like history played the joke on him!
It's beginning to look, to me, like it might be a good time to learn Russian - it might be a freer country than ours will be soon. At least Russia has a REAL MAN at the helm.
I became acquainted with some Russians who visited here in my little state back just before Glasnost. I wish I had kept in touch with them - they felt like cousins. I wonder if there's a ‘pen pal’ link to Russians.
I have long felt an affinity with the Russian people - and prayed they would escape the yoke of communism. When you study genealogy, you find that we of English origin are more of the same stock with the Russian people than than other European countries.
(The group that came over here for a visit in the early 80’s were 6 people - 3 were regular Russians while 3 were obviously their KGB watchdogs. I had a couple of fun adventures where I ‘escaped’ with the ‘free’ group, taking them shopping/sight seeing. WE had a blast - and they got Levi's and white jeans - and then costume jewelry at the county fair ;o) - where they also met a friend of mine who had just become governor. The barely disguised panic and fury on the watchdogs faces when we returned was priceless.
