The fire department in my town does a little trick on a continuing basis.

Fireman Jack will be scheduled to work Wednesday. He deliberateley calls in sick. So, Fireman John gets called in to work overtime. I’m sure the union has a ‘ghost’ schedule of when everyone will take sick leave...and who wants OT and when.

The result: All sick leave gets used up, and every hour of sick leave taken results in time and a half OT for somebody else. And, Jack has a part time job lined up for Wednesday (his sick day).

The city tried to correct this, by shuffling personnel and closing a station whenever too many people called in sick. There was an uproar, red herring arguments about safety, and eventually they ran the fire chief out of town.

So, it continues.

The unionization of public employees is immoral.

Of course the whistle blowers will be fired or maybe end up in a dumpster dead. The investigation will take a couple years and even more workers will be hired to take care of snow. Supervisor pay will be raised and all will be happy.
