Orwell came to my mind.

What comes to mind for me is the 1960-early 70s Club of Rome study, the "Limits of Growth" with its' simple collection of differential equations that predicted the fall of civilization within twenty years.

The only escape was to actively decrease population by a significant fraction. Yeah right, to make it to the 1990s we'd have to eliminate one person in two. See how well that worked out...

So many of Ehrlich's population "bomb" predictions were wrong he's lately taken to claiming he never made any in the first place. I agree the population bomb is the greatest junk science hoax of the century, but silent spring and the certainty of nuclear annihilation are right up there.

Globull warming just might beat them all at the end of the day.
