What one does have to understand is that what religious conviction, scripture and tradition regards as “sinful” should not necessarily be regarded as a “crime” by the civil state.

Nonsense. The very people who wrote our Constitution, codified laws in their States making Sodomy a capital crime. At Common Law, Sodomy was considered a crime so perverse, so degenerate, so evil, that it wasn't even named. It was referred to as "The crime against nature." Homosexuality is an evil. Its as evil as one can get. We don't tolerate it, and the civil government shouldn't allow such an affront to The Creator to be permitted.
