Detroit died in July 1967 during the black riots, it just taken the rest of the US this long to notice. It never recovered.

Just a few hours later, widespread looting and gunfire began, and hundreds of policemen faced off with a mob of thousands. Michigan Gov. George Romney called in the Michigan National Guard to put down the riot, but they could do little to stop it. President Lyndon Johnson sent in 4,700 paratroopers during the second day of rioting.

The violence would not be contained until July 27. “After five days of anarchy,” writes PBS, “more than 40 people are dead, hundreds are injured, and damage estimates hit $50 million.

Me too, because it speaks volumes about the disregard the public employees had for all of the hard work by taxpayers that went into buying the books. They just didn’t care and couldn’t be bothered to find a new home for them.

Those pictures looked like Hollywood set stages for an apocalyptic movie.

Sets the tone to express something cataclysmic happened....something did.......

I don't think it is only Detroit. Look at the infrastructure around much of the northeastern United States. I went back to upstate NY over the summer, it was unbelievable in some areas. Complete ghetto, complete lack of care of maintenance, the trees and greenery looked like it was returning to the wild. I kept thinking, "WTH are you people paying nearly all your money to the government for, to live like this?" My daughter, 13, was pretty horrified herself. I told her, "this is what happens when progressives run things". Even the nicer areas were creepy.

It was disturbing.

We all know that the major reason is one that we cannot state, even here on FR.

Ok, I'll bite.

They use double decker bus’s and go to Minnesota where they get better welfare benefits we see them on I-94 all the time. Problem is they welcome them which is one of the reason’s we moved out of the Twin Cities.

Yes, I use to work with a guy from Minnesota who also lived in Milwaukee for a time. He said the same thing. That welfare payments were high in both Minnesota and Wisconsin and that was bringing in the welfare class from Detroit and Chicago. It was in effect destroying both cities in the same way Detroit was destroyed so many years ago. Even a blind man could see it. But liberalism is impervious to logic and reason and even facts directly in front of you. As Michael Savage says,

"Liberalism is a mental disorder".

Whether you like Savage or not, he nailed it with that one.

It's so sad and disturbing to see what has happened to this once-great city in America.

Check out all the "Ghost Town Detroit" links you get with a simple Google search:

And from those links, there are even more "Detroit in Ruins" type links to choose from...

Detroit: The Triumph of Progressive Public Policy
Capitol Confidential ^ | 8/10/2010 | Jarrett Skorup
FR Posted August 11, 2010 by MichCapCon

Imagine a city where all the major economic planks of the statist or "progressive" platform have been enacted:
* A "living wage" ordinance, far above the federal minimum wage, for all public employees and private contractors.
* A school system that spends significantly more per pupil than the national average.
* A powerful school employee union that militantly defends the exceptional pay, benefits and job security it has won for its members.
* A powerful government employee union that does the same for its members.
* A tax system that aggressively redistributes income from businesses and the wealthy to the poor and to government bureaucracies.

Would this be "a shining city on a hill," exciting the admiration of all? Detroit has been dubbed "the most liberal city in America" and each of these "progressive" policies is alive and well there. Let's look at how this has worked out... (Excerpt) Read more at mackinac.org ...

How awful! The wood work inside some of those churches should be salvaged and used by someone who cares.

Thanks for the pings.

These photos are astounding to see. To realize this city is still “there” and somehow lives and works around these relics is unsettling.

Maybe I’m oversimplifying it- but it appears this is THE result of unions, welfare and liberal government at work.

Oh please Mary. You know the truth. Deep down you know the problem but are afraid of confronting it. In some sense, you are a part of the problem. When people cannot admit to the problem, they will never get a handle on it. Okay, just for fun, try this: It's an eleven letter word that starts with d and ends with c.

Americans traded liberty and freedom for a TV clicker.

The image below says it all. No respect for book and learning. Hell, they don't even consider the books worth stealing.

The Guardian is a UK leftwing paper. For their information this Detroit vision is incidentally the allusion of "Toad Hall" in Kenneth Graham's Wind in the Willows.

When juveniles, those who cannot be honest enough with themselves, are in charge, things fall apart. Kind of like college sophomores voting for Barack Obama.

This is far over the head of anyone associated with the Guardian.

The truth is most cities primarily run by black people look like ghettos..
In the U.S, Africa or anywhere...
A Hard saying but it is true..

97+% of black voters voted for Obama...
Merely 3% were smart..
